(Cl. 45-682) The invention relates to small suit-cases particularly adapted for portable sewing machines and constituted substantially by a base and a cover that is removably applied thereto.

The main object of this invention is to provide a small suit-case, wherein a sewing machine or the like is displaceable on its 'base by means of a suitable hinge connection in such a way that the base of the suit-case acts as the base of the sewing machine, when it is in its work position.

Another object of present invention is to provide a small suit-case adapted to contain the sewing machine and other members such as a pedal for controlling the electric drive of said machine and a small case for the attachments (brush, screwdriver, oiler, etc.), said suit-case having however a very small size.

The invention will next be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:

FIG. 1 is a perspective front view of a small suit-case, according to the invention, in open position and of its cover with the sewing machine fitted thereto and shown in dashed lines and in the rest position.

FIG. 2 is a front view of the small suit-case base with the sewing machine in working position.

In the drawing, 1 indicates the base or flat cover section of the suit-case and 2 the removable cover or box like cover section. This removable cover in secured to the base 1 by means of hinges 5, that are connected to the rear base edge, and by lock 6 which is provided on the front part under the handle 7. The cover 2 includes on inside thereof a section 8, to receive the sewing machine-a small extension table 9 being arranged in the bottom of said sectionand two smaller sections 10 and 11 containing respectively the pedal (not shown) for the electric drive of the sewing machine and a suitable small case (not shown) for the machine attachments.

The pedal and the small case can be secured to the cover by means of small straps of known form and application. The two smaller sections 10 and 11 are provided in a part of the base that is free, when the sewing machine is in the rest position shown in FIG. 1 and on the contrary engaged by the sewing machine when the latter is lifted to working position.

The sewing machine can be brought to its working position by pivoting it around the hinge 4 until the lower face of its section 15 engages with the base 1.

In this position the base 1 constitutes the base of the sewing machine. A hook or locking member 16 and a round pin or prong 17 are provided on the lower face of the sewing machine section 15 to provide a quick resilient coupling 18 to hold the sewing machine in position.

When the pin 17 is inserted into its receptacle wherein is coupling member 18, which is secured to the upper face 12 of the base 1 by means of screws 19 (FIG. 5), the sewing machine is fastened to said base 1.

The hook 16 serves to prevent a possible displacement of the sewing machine from its working position.

The safe fastening is obtained by the cooperation of the hook 16 with a rod 20 (FIG. 6) provided with a sliding block 24 (FIG. 4). The rod 20 is secured to the upper face 13 of the base 1 through the bracket 21 and screws 22 at one of its ends, whereas it is inserted into the bracket 23 of sliding block 24 at its other end. Said sliding block is therefore prevented from effecting a vertical motion. A cross movement as to the axis of rod 20 is allowed the sliding block; the upper face 13 being provided with an associated slot 36 for this purpose.

Turning over of the sewing machine is readily obtained by a hand-controlled movement of the sliding block 24 in the direction of the arrow (FIG. 7). In such a case the rod 20 leaves the operation range of hook 16, so that this latter can freely detach from the base.

The sliding block 24 automatically returns to its position of stable equilibrium under the control of the resilient action of rod 20. In the next fastening step of the sewing machine in its working position an automatic restoration of the condition according to FIG. 6 takes place owing to the particular form of the lower part of hook 16 such as to cause displacement of rod 20.

When an extension of the working plane of the sewing machine arm 25 is required, this can be achieved by having recourse to a small table 9. This small table is substantially shaped as a parallelogram and the part thereof which is to be engaged with said arm of the sewing machine has a form corresponding to the shape of this arm.

Fastening of small table 9 is performed by means of the action of a rigid and resiliently movable coupling system.

In the embodiment as shown in FIG. 9, the fastening of said small table is obtained by two rigid and one resilient coupling systems.

The rigid coupling systems are constituted respectively by a tab or prong 26 and a pin or prong 27, both fastened to the small table 9. The tab 26 as well as the pin 27 are respectively inserted into a suitable seat in the free arm 25, as clearly shown in FIGS. 9 and 10, in such a way that the upper plane of the small table is at the same level as the working plane of the free arm.

The resiliently removable coupling system is constituted by the pin or looking member 28 secured at the free end of the resilient plate 29.

The other end of the plate 29 is inserted into the slit 30 of small table 9 and secured thereto by means of the pin 31. The motion of pin 28 in the guide 32 of small table 9 is controlled by the lever 33, that is hinged in 34 to said small table.

FIGS. 9 and 11 show the position of lever 33 and pin 28 respectively before and after the resilient fastening of the small table. In this latter case the pin 28 is inserted into the seat 35 provided on the free arm 25 of the sewing machine.

What is claimed is:

1. A portable sewing machine arrangement comprising a suit-case having a box-like cover section and a substantially flat cover section adapted to close said box-like section, said sections being detachable, means on said sections to hold the same together to constitute a closed case, a sewing machine of a shape adapted to be accommodated in said box-like section, and means pivotally connecting said machine to said fiat cover section for movement between two positions, said machine in one of said positions being stored on its side against the flat cover and adapted for accommodation in the box-like section, said machine in the other of said positions being supported 1011 said fiat cover in substantially perpendicular relation thereto and assuming an operating position with said flat cover detached from said box-like section, said flat cover constituting a base for said machine in the operating position thereof.

An arrangement as claimed in claim 1, comprising an auxiliary table, prongs rigidly attached to said table, a locking member resiliently supported on said table, and a cam member operatively disposed with respect to and adapted to displace the locking member in a direction perpendicular to said prongs, the machine being provided with openings adapted to accommodate the prongs and locking member.

An arrangement as claimed in claim 1, comprising a prong and locking member on said machine, the flat section being provided with receptacles for the prong and locking member with the machine standing erect on the fiat cover section, and a rod on the flat section adjacent the receptacle for the locking member for engaging the latter, said rod being a cantilever member displacable for releasing the locking member.

4. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1, wherein the box-like member is provided with compartments for storing auxiliary parts.
