SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,924, dated August 5, 1884. Application filed June 9, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, ALEXANDER MoMILLEN, a subject of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow-Tongs, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to windowtongs designed for removing goods from the showwindows of stores andfrom other similar places difficult of access.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved tongs; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 a plan of the same, the tongs being open in Figs. 1 and 3 and closed in Fig. 2.
The main part or shank A is preferably hollow, and maybe a metallic tube. To one end of the shank is secured a handle, B, of suitable shape to be grasped by the hand, the inner end of the handle being reduced at b to enter the shank up to the shoulder I), and a pin, 21", passing through the side of the tubular shank into the reduced part b of the handlc. To the other end of the shank A is secured the fixed jaw 0, it having a reduced part, 0, a shoulder, c, and a pin, 0', which secures it to the shank just as the handle is secured to the said shank by the pin b". The handle and the fixed jaw may be secured to the shank by any suitable known means. A movable jaw, D, is hinged to the fixed jaw by means of a pivot, E, which passes through ears 0", formed on the jaw O, and through an ear, (1, formed on the jaw D, said jaw having its inner end slot-ted to straddle the fixed jaw when the jaws are opened. The inner end of the movable jaw (in the drawings the lower end) is extended from the pivot E toward the shank A, and the inner surface of said inner end is inclined toward the fixed jaw or notched at cl. Alever, F, straddlesthe fixed jaw O, and is pivoted thereto at G, and lies in the notch d when the jaws are open, the jaws being opened by a spring of spiral wire placed between them, and held in place by studs 0* d, cast or otherwise formed on the inner faces of the jaws, respectively, which studs enter the ends of the spring, as shown in Fig. 1. A red, H, within the hollow shank is pivoted at one end at I to an ear,f, on the lever F, between the ends of said lever, and at the other end to an ear, k, on the lever K, between the ends of said lever K, the latter-named lever working within a slot, b", in the handle B and turning on the pivot L. By drawing the free end of the lever K toward the unattached end of the handle B the free end of the lever F will be drawn back against the inner side of the innerend of the movable jaw D, closing the jaws firmly upon any article placed between them. In use the lever is held in one hand, and the jaws are closed by pressing the thumb of the same hand upon the outer side of the lever K after running the fixed jaw under the articleto be grasped.
The invention above described is intended, particularly, to be used in reaching light goods-such as hats, bonnets, gloves, handkerchiefs, cloth in the piece, or similar articles-displayed in the show-windows of stores, where a salesman cannot well enter without disturbing the arrangement of the goods, and where the goods are beyond the reach of the unassisted arm.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the shank provided at one end with a handle, jaws arranged at the other end of said shank, one of said jaws being movable, and means, substantially as described. whereby said jaws may be operated by the same hand which grasps the ban dle, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the shank provided at one end with a handle, jaws arranged at the other end of said shank, one of said jaws being movable, means, substantially as described, whereby said jaws are normally held open, and means, substantially as described, whereby said jaws may be closed by the same hand which grasps the handle, as and for the purpose specified.
8. The combination of the shank provided at one end with a handle, the jaw fixed at the other end of said shank, another jaw pivoted to said fixed jaw, a lever pivoted to said fixed jaw, another lever pivoted to said handle, and a rod connecting said levers, as and for the purpose specified.
