LEONARD E. CLAWSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CHIVINEY.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,621, dated July 29, 18842.
Application filed February 2l, 1884.
To all whom, it pta/y concer-71,.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD GLAwsoN, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, haveinvented an Improve` ment in Chimneys; and I hereby declare the lfollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-l tion thereof.
My invention relates to certain improvements in chimneys, such as are made of cen1 ent or pottery-ware; and it consists of a joint and joint-band for the meeting ends of the sections, a meansA for connecting the lower end of the chimney with a base or fireplace, and supporting the same upon the beams or studding oi the building, and in certain details of construction, all of which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe lireplace, showing the means by which it is secured to the stndding, and a short section of the chimney. Fig. 2 is aview ofthe meeting ends of two sections of the tube, the basc, dustbox, and valve, and the supporting-breekets and plate. Fig. 3 is a view of the sectional band. Fig. 4 is a front view of the base andv the bracket.
A A are sections of pottery-tube, such as may be used in building chimneys. rIhe ends I3 B are made smaller than the main portions of the tube to receive the band by which they are held together, these ends being also roughened, so that when the bands are clamped up on them they will hold securely. Thebands C are made in two parts, as shown, with lugs D, perforated for bolts, by which they are held together. By making the bands in two parts they may be put on and taken off the roughened ends B without danger of breaking the latter. They can be screwed up as tight as to hold the sections firmly together, and they may thus be united in lengths and let down into spaces between the walls without making extensive cuts for the purpose. The bands or collars being iitted around the reduced ends B, their outside surfaces will be 'flush with the main portion of the tube, and water from storms will'run off, instead of ruiming down (No model.)
between the band and tube. When the chimney is to be supported upon a bracket, as at t E, a plate, F, is laid upon it, :and a box, G, rests upon this plate. An opening is madein the top ofthe box, surroundedby a cup-shaped flange, (j, into which the lower end of the chimney fits. Upon one side 'of the box is an opening, II, with a gate, I, which may be opened for the removal of soot or dust as it accumulates. It is often desirable to have a iire-place without occupying much space or projecting it into the room. In such a case I make a box, J, of sheet metal, which fits between the studding, and has the face toward the room just iush with the plaster or finish of the room. The outer or back portion projects outward as far as is necessary to form the ring or cup g upon the top for the support of the pipe-tubes A, and the whole rests upon the beam or sill. A flange, K, projects around the sides of the box or lire-place, and is per- `foi-ated with holes for bolts or nails, by which it is secured to the studding or beams. The interior of the bonr is fitted with brick, cement, concrete, or other suitable substance to form the fire-place, into which the customary iron-work is afterward fitted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the tubular section A, having reduced ronghened ends B, with the two-part clamping-bands C, provided with perforated lugs D, substantially as herein described.
2. In a sectional'tubular chimney, the base and supporting-brackets, in combination with the box or chamber with a side opening and gate, as shown, andthe flange upon the top to receive the end of thellowcr section, substantially as herein described. v
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LEONARD E. CLAWSON.
