INVENTOR. c/E/V/V//VGS E FOGLE;
3,015,160 SCISSORS Jennings E. Fogle, Manteca, Calif., assigner of one-half to Harry C. Fogle, Oilton, Okla. Filed June 3, 1960, Ser. No. 33,707 3 Claims. (Cl. 30-232) This invention relates to improvements in shears and is'particularlydirected to a novel and improved pair of scissors, which are designed to be operated by the thumb 'and index'finge'r of a user.
A primary lobject of the present invention is to provide a small pair of sturdy'and easily operated scissors,
vwhich can be effectively and easily used for many cutting tasks that require tine and quick cutting, as for example, clipping the bills of birds, severing the stems of fruit or flowers. v v
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a pair of small and sturdy blades, which are piv- 1otally connected together and which are provided with outer, reinforced edges from which wings laterally extend to support a pair of finger-engaging loops or bands, the bands being attached to the wings for simple adjustment about an axis that is parallel to the pivotal axis of lthe blades and being' constructed in such a manner and edges having outer cutting portions and having inner scalloped portions, which insure a more effective grip on the material to be cut.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide overlapping rearward ends on the blades, which ends receive a pivot means and which are formed, rearwardly of the pivot means and on their outer edge portions in a cupped fashion, for strengthening purposes and for more comfort in use.
A The foregoing and ancillary objects are attained by this invention, the preferred embodiment of which is set forth in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE l is a top plan view of the improved scissors of this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view thereof:
FIGURE 3 is a rear elevational view thereof;
FIGURE 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIGURE 3; and
FIGURE 5 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the scissors includes a pair of complementary blades 12 and 14. The blades 12 and 14 are of generally triangular shape and include overlapping, rearward end portions 16 and 18. The overlapping rearward end portions are substantially circular in plan, with the blade 12 having its end portion 18 lying under the portion 16 of the blade 14, as shown in FIGURE 1, so that the rearward end portion 18 is of larger diameter. Apart from the dilerence in the size of the end portions 16 and 18, which difference is provided for reasons to be apparent, the - blades 12 and 14 are similar in shape and construction.
In the latter respect, eachl of the blades includes an inner cutting portion 20, which is formed at its outer end portion with a sharpened cutting edge 22 and is formed at its inner end portion with a scalloped portion 24. The
United States Patent Patented Jan. 2, 1962 ICC 2 outer edges 26 of each of the blades are curved upwardly out of the plane of the blades for strengthening purposes.
Each of the blades is provided with a laterally outstanding and integral wing 28, which is disposed intermediate the forward and rearward ends of the blades. Each of the wings is extended slightly upwardly from the plane of the blades and is formed with an opening to receive a bolt 30 or similar fastening element. The bolt 30, which is secured by a nut 32, provides the mounting means for a finger encircling or engaging band 34.
The bands 34, formed from suitable flexible material, are attached by the bolts 30 to the wings so as to be adjustable about an axis that is substantially parallel to the pivotal axis of the blades, as will be described. Each of the bands is in the form of a ring, which has a split 36, whereby the bands may be adjusted in order to conform to variousrindex linger and thumb measurements.
The rearward end portions 16 and 18 of the blades overlap and are pivotally connected together by a pivot means, which is in the nature of a bolt 38, secured by a nut 40. It is to be particularly noted that the outer edge of the rearward end portion 18 is provided with an upwardly curved ange 42 and the edge of the end portion 16 is also provided with an upwardly curved flange 44, such anges being concentrically disposed and being provided for strengthening purposes as well as to add to the comfort of the user in employing the scissors.
A stop 46 upstands from the endiportion 18 and is adapted to be engaged by an offset shoulder 48 that is formed on the edge of the end portion 16 of the blade 14.
In use, the rings 34 are adjusted as to diameter and bodily position, relative to the blades, by means of bending the rings upon themselves and by loosening the nuts 32 and turning the rings, so that the rings or bands can be positioned and formed for the comfort and ease of use of the user. The users thumb and index nger are inserted in the bands to move the blades about the pivot axis, the closing movement of the blades bein-g limited by abutting stop means, including the stop 46 and the shoulder 48. The complementary scalloped edges 24 provide a means for retaining the material, while the cutting edges 22 are cutting the material.
The scissors have been found to be effective in use for cutting of bills of birds and for cutting grapes, as well as for cutting other fruits and flowers.
While the preferred embodiment of this invention has been described and illustrated herein, other forms may be realized as come the scope of ythe appended claims.
