Description
BUTTER PATTIES Filed Aug. 13, 1959 FIG.|
IN VE N T CR5 8. KA VANA UGH GERALD H. KAI ANA UGH ax-fl FRANCIS 3,014,616 BUTTER PATTHES Francis E. Kavanaugh, 153 Donlea Drive, Leaside, Toronto 17, Ontario, Canada, and Gerald H. Kavanaugh, 14 Merrick Sh, Hamilton, Gntario, Canada Filed Aug. 13, 1959, Ser. No. 833,576 2 Claims. (Cl. 22tl-97) This invention relates to dishes and in particular to small dishes which are used in restaurants to hold a portion of butter or a single serving of jam, marmalade, catsup or the like. Such dishes are frequently referred to as butter patties. It is common practice to fill these butter patties before meal time and set them out on the counter or in a refrigertor ready for use. There are two disadvantages to most currently used butter patties. In the first place it is difficult to remove the butter or other substance from the pattie, and, in the second place,
individual patties take up a large amount of counter space or refrigerator space. The object of this invention is to overcome these disadvantages.
According to this invention the side wall of the pattie has a shoulder spaced from an edge thereof to engage the edge of another pattie with which the first mentioned pattie is stacked. The upper surface of the bottom of the pattie slopes upwardly from adjacent the lower edge of the side wall at one side of the pattie to adjacent the upper edge of the side wall at the opposite side of the pattie. This facilitates removal by scraping of butter or other substance from the interior of the pattie. The under surface of the bottom of the pattie slopes downwardly from adjacent the upper edge of the sidewall at one side of the pattie to adjacent the lower edge of the side wall at the opposite side of the pattie to provide a recess in the underside of the pattie whereby, when one pattie is stacked upon another, such portion of a substance contained in the lower pattie as may extend above the upper edge may be received in said recess. A further feature of the invention is that the under surface of the bottom where it meets the side wall adjacent its lower edge is spaced from said lower edge, whereby when one pattie is stacked on another pattie, the upper pattie will be supported by its shoulder and by the under surface of its bottom on the lower pattie. Thus the patties may be stacked to conserve space. In addition the upper end of the pattie is smaller than the lower end. The pattie is also of an irregular shape so that when stacked one upon the other the upwardly sloping bottom walls of adjacent patties are parallel, maintaining a uniform space between the upper surface of one bottom wall and the under surface of the bottom wall of the pattie immediately above.
The external surface of the side wall of the pattie slopes downwardly and outwardly from the upper edge beyond the lowest extremity of the bottom wall to form a skirt. The lower edge of the skirt forms a convenient projection for grasping when lifting one pattie from a stack of like patties and also forms a firm base for the pattie to stand on when placed on a fiat surface. At the same time the skirt holds the lower extremity of the bottom wall clear of the table top, so that if there should be any butter sticking to the bottom wall it will not rub off on the table top,
The invention is hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of the upper side of a butter pattie;
FIGURE 2 is a similar view of the under side of a butter pattie; and
FIGURE 3 shows a plurality of patties in cross-section, stacked one on the other. 1
In FIGURE 1, a butter pattie, indicated generally at 3,@14,6l5 Pateinted Dec. 26, 1961 10, has a side wall 11 and a bottom 12. side wall 11 has a substantially semi-circular front portion 11a and a straight flat rear portion 11b.
The bottom 12 of the pattie slopes up from adjacent the lower edge of the front of the side wall 11a to adjacent the upper edge of the rear 11b of the side wall forming a substantially ungular-shaped interior container portion 13. Since the bottom 12 is of substantially uniform cross-section the underside of the pattie is of similar shape to the upper, the bottom sloping downwardly from adjacent the upper edge of rear wall portion 11b to adjacent the front 11a of the side wall.
The side wall 11 slopes downwardly and outwardly beyond the lowest extremity of underside of the bottom 12 to form a depending skirt 14.
A shoulder 15 is formed on the rear portion 11b of the wall, in the interior of the skirt 14. The shoulder 15 is spaced from the edge of the wall and is adapted to engage the edge of another pattie with which it is stacked as hereafter described.
The underside of bottom 12 meets the front side wall 11a just above the lower edge of the said wall 11a. The slope of side wall 11 is such that if one pattie is stacked on another its upper edge will nest within the skirt of a second pattie, as shown in FIGURE 3. The upper edge of the rear side wall 11b of the lower pattie will engage the internal shoulder 15 in skirt 14,
while the upper edge of the front side wall portion 11a will engage with the underside of bottom wall 12 at the point where it meets the front wall portion 11a. Skirt i4 restricts relative side movement between the two patties so stacked.
In use, as illustrated in FIGURE 3, a plurality of butter patties it may have portions of butter B deposited in them prior to serving. These portions may project above the upper edge of the side wall 11, but the sloping bottom 12 of the pattie above it leaves sufficient space to prevent the butter sticking to the underside of the bottom above it.
The irregular shape of the patties ensures that when stacked the bottoms of the patties will slope in the same direction. By irregular shape is meant a shape in which the periphery of the pattie is geometrically symmetrical about not more than one horizontal axis.
The side wall 11 having a downward and outward slope, the lower edge of skirt 14- projects outwardly beyond the upper end of the side wall 11, thus allowing the pattie to be easily and safely grasped for removal.
When served to a customer, the pattie seats firmly on the table on its skirt, and the sloping bottom allows the butter to be scraped out of the pattie without tipping of the pattie. The rounded portion of the front side wall 11a eliminates corners and enables the user to remove the contents with an ordinary table knife.
What we claim as our invention is: p
