UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID CLINTON TRESIER, OF ANAMOSA, IOWA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,663, dated June 17, 1884.
(No model.)
To all whont it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, DAVID C. TRESIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anamosa, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Caps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
This invention has relation to chimney-caps; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the base of the cap, which is made in tapering form, being reduced toward the top, as shown. A tapering neck, 13, extends upward from the base, and to the neck is joined the transverse pipe 0, which is open at each end.
D represents a band-ring adapted to pass into or over the end of the pipe 0, and to this band-ring is attached, by arms E, projecting therefrom, an obtuse cone deflector-shield, F, the convex surface of which is turned toward the end of the pipe. This shield-deflector is larger in diameter than the pipe 0, being usually double the distance across. Its concave 5 surface 9 is turned outward from the pipe, so that currents of air striking said concave surface are made to converge to the center thereof and recoil with whirling movements, which facilitate the escape of the smoke from the chimney through the openings h between the end of the pipe and the shield-deflector. A shield-deflector is arranged at each end of the pipe 0, and usually these deflectors are made adjustable or capable of being moved closer to or farther from the open end of the pipe.
In order to effect this the band-ring D is made of proper size to slide within or upon the end of the pipe, and the arms E, which connect the deflector to the ring, are so shaped that they will not obstruct the adjustment.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A chimneycap having an upwardly-reduced base, surmounted by a tapering neck carrying a transverse pipe open at each end, and connected to the ends of said pipe by bandrings and arms, the obtuse cone-deflectors of larger diameter than said pipe, having their concave surfaces turned from said pipe, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID CLINTON TRESTER.
