ISAIAH W. SHOE-MAKER, OF ROSSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING FIRE-PLACE FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,519, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed October 23, 1883.
To all whom, it ntwy concern:
Be it known that l, ISAIAH XV. SHOE- )IXKER, of llosston, Armstrong county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Folding Fire-Place Fender, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a simple contrivance for a fireplace fender of wire-cloth material, contrived to fold compactly when removed from the fireplace, and being arranged with a sloping front, having a neater appearance, and being more desirable for use, because the receding front is less in the way and less liable to catch the clothes of persons near it, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved folding fireplacefender, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 represent modifications of the device for securing the fender to the sides of the mantel.
The said improved folding fireplace fender consists, essentially, of the front panel, a, and two side panels, I), of woven wire, stretched on suitable frames, the sides I) being inclined backward from the bottom upward on the front edge, and said sides I) and the front a being hinged together at c, fon folding the fender together when put away, and for extending it to be put in use; and the sides b have handle-studs d attached to the frame, for affcrding a convenient means of lifting the fender when it is to be taken from the fire place or replaced thereat. With the sides and front thus arranged, I provide a top panel, 0, which may be partly of wire and partly of sheet metal or wholly of wire, as preferred, and which may be used or not, as required.
(No model.)
The top 6 is to be laid on the top of the sides and front, whereon it is to be retained by the studs f, projecting upward from the top of 5 the front a. On the bars g of the side panels, next to the fire-place front and at a suitable point below the top, I provide clasps or brackets h, to connect with the front plate of the fire-place by thumb-screws t, as shown in Fig. l, or by spring hooks or clasps K, as shown in Fig. 3, to hook behind the edge of the front plate, A; and I also provide a sheet-metal back plate, j, with a suitable hook or lug, k, at each end, to drop down between the fender and the fireplace front to rest on said brackets h, for a blower to increase the draft, when desired.
Screw-eyes may be attached to wood mantels, for connecting the fender to the fire-place by suitable hooks, K, as in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the fender and brackets h, secured near the upper ends ofthe sides of the fender, and provided with setscrews or other analogous devices for attachment to the sides of the mantel, of the sheetmetal back plate,j, suspended from the same brackets that secure the fender to the mantel sides, as set forth.
2. The combination, with theimprovedfireplace fender consisting of the front panel, a, v
