Be it known that I, MARX F. PELLETIER, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shoe, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved shoe, which is constructed in such a manner as to he slipped over the foot, not from the top, as heretofore, but from the back.

To this effect the invention consists, principally, in a shoe having movable back quarters, adapted to be attached to the vamp, and to form water-tight seams.

The invention also consists in the details of construction, as hereinafter more fully set out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a side view of my improved shoe. Fig. II is a perspective view of the same, exposing the rear quarters; Fig. III, a back view, and Fig; IV a bottom view, of the shoe.

The letter a represents the vamp of a shoe. 6 is the sole, (1 the heel, and e c the back quarters. The back quarters, e, are made of hard rubber, sheet metal, or other rigid material, are separated at their back, and are attached to the vamp a at the ankle-seams by pins f, or in other suitable manner. I prefer to make the back quarters, c, more rounded at the top than heretofore, so that they may well fit over the heehwhich cannot be'properly done in shoes that are drawn over the foot from the top. At the back the quarters e are locked by a suitable catch or catches, r and a rubber strip should be interposed at the joint. The heel d has a groove formed near its upper edge, and into this groove is placed a rubber gasket. 71. The quarters 3:, when closed, fit with their lower edge into this groove and compress the gasket, thus producing a water-tight joint. The lowermost front edge of each quarter a is by pin 17 hinged to the sole in front of the heel. In this way a positive turning-point for each quarter is obtained. In order to insert the foot into the shoe, the catches g are unlocked and the quarters e swung apart on their pins f t, as in Fig. III. To close the shoe the quarters c are swung back and locked together.

The construction of my shoe may be modiiied and still retain the principles of my invention. Thus the quarters 0 may be connected, and the joint be formed between the vamp and one of the quarters; or the quarters may be attached to the heel, and disconnected from the vamp at both sides; or other similar constructions may be devised, the es sence of my invention being to so construct a shoe that the back quarters are movable for the insertion of the foot.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, in a shoe, of vamp a with the back quarters, e e, connected there to, the quarters a being separated at the back and provided with catch 51, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, in a shoe, of vamp a. with sole 1), grooved heel d, and gasket h, and with the movable back quarters, e, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, in a shoe, of vamp a with sole'b, heel (Z, gasket h, movable back quarters, 0, pins '1', and catch 5/, substantially as specified.

4. The combination, in a shoe, of the vamp with the back quarters attached to said vamp and adapted to be opened and closed, and with means, substantially as described, for rendering the back and bottom joints of said back quarters water-tight, substantially as specified.
