J. GIBBONS.
DOUBLE SNAP HOOK FOR HARNESS No. 300,065. Patented June 10, 1884.
UNITE STATES PATENT OEEicE.
JOHN GIBBONS, OF WEST TROY, NEW YORIQ ASSIGNOR TO THE UNION HARDWARE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
OK FOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,065, dated June 10, 1884. Application filed November 13, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN GIBBONS, of the village of West Troy, county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Double Snaps for Harness, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to harness-snaps; and it consists, as will be detailed hereinafter, in the combination of two reversing hooks arranged in the same line and with their points toward each other; an intermediately-placed body-piece, to which the reversing shanks 0f the hooks attach; a latch-bolt arranged in a chamber in the body-piece, and provided with a spiral spring surrounding said bolt where within said chamber, and said spring constructed to force said latch-bolt outwardly, so as to cause its outer end to engage with the under side of both of the hooks at their ends.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, there are shown two figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of parts by letter-reference used in both of them, of which Figure l is a perspective, and Fig. 2 a 1011- gitudinal vertical section, of the same device.
The several parts of the device are designated by letter-reference, and their function is explained as follows:
The letters a and a designate two hooks, with their shanks S S reversed, so that the points of the hooks approach each other, but so as to leave a space between them. These attach oppositely to the sides of the intermediately-arranged body-piece B. Within the latter there is formed the chamber F; and the letter A designates a latch-bolt arranged within said chamber, and surrounded with the helical spring 0. 4
The letter 0 indicates a shoulder made on the latch-bolt, against which the end of the spring 0 engages when the bolt is forced down.
The letter i designates apassage-way through the body-piece for the passage of the lower end of the latch-bolt when forced down against the force of the spring. As thus constructed and arranged, there is an opening, D, be-
tween the ends of the reversing hooks, and this opening is closed by the latch-bolt A and the operation of the spring 0, and thus producing the two eye-inclosures E E. When the latch-bolt is forced down against the force of the spring, the hooks at each end are made attachable, the device performing the offices of a link, which is easily connected or disconnected at either end.
I am well aware that in Letters Patent No. 276.965, granted to me, as assignor, May 1, 1883, a single hook is shown as arranged with its shank connected to a body-piece, an attached eye on the end of the latter opposite to that in which the hook is placed, and the body provided with a latch-bolt constructed with a spring, and adapted to engage with the under side and end of one hook in the Same manner that my improvement herein shows it adapted to engage with two hooks. In this older device the eye at one end was a closed eye, and the device was not adapted to be used as a connecting-link that was attachable and detachable at either end. IVith my improvement a double snap is formed, which becomes useful in the attachment of breast-chains, trace-chains, and a variety of purposes-where a link-connection is desirable. These devices are made of malleable cast metal, and molded with an outthrow to the hook-points,to insert the latch-bolt and spring, and then the hooks are bent, so as to be in line.
I am aware that a double snap, broadly considered, is not a new device. I am also aware that a snap-hook of this class has been patented, in which two reversing hooks were shown as arranged parallel, and used in connection with two bolts which were actuated being used in connection with one of the hooks. In my device but one bolt is used, and this is actuated to close the opening between both hooks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In a double snap, the combination of two reversing hooks having their approaching by an intermediately-placed spring, eachbolt points in line, with a space bet-ween them, an Signed at Troy, New York, this 23d day of intermediate bodypart to which the hooks at October, 1883, and in our presence whose 10 tech, a chamber within the body part, and a names were by us below written.
bolt-latch within said chamber, and construct T V T ed with an encircling-spring adapted to force Jon} GIBBOI said bolt-latch to close the opening between the hook-pro11gs substantially as herein shown and described.
Vi tnesses:
GEO. R. MENEELY, CHARLES S. BRINTNALL.
