- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL BRIERLY BUTTERWORTH, OF FRANKLIN FALLS, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
TUNING-FORK;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,956, dated June 10, 1884.
Application filed October 24, 1 883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BRIERLY BUT- TERWORTH, of Franklin Falls, in the county of Merrimac, of the State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuning -F0rks; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a rear view, Fig. 3 an edge elevation, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section, of atuning-fork provided with my invention, the nature ,of which is hereinafter defined.
The pitch of tuning-forks usually varies with the length, width, and thickness of their prongs, and may be made to correspond with any note of the gamut, such a fork being a pronged or furcated piece of steel which when struck emits a sound or tone of a certain pitch. 1
In carrying out my improvement I combine with such a fork a slotted scale-bar and a movable yoke, and means of clamping such yoke to the scale-bar. The yoke encompasses the fork transversely of it, and is adapted to slide lengthwise on its prongs. The scale-bar is fastened at its lower end to the fork below its prongs, and extends upward along but without contact with them. Furthermore, the yoke is adapted to slide on the scale-bar lengthwise thereof, and is provided with a clamping screw and nut adapted to it and the scale-bar, to enable it to be clamped to the bar, the bar being slotted lengthwise to receive the screw.
In the drawings, Adenotes the tuning-fork,
B the yoke, G the slotted scale-bar, D the,
clamp-screw, and E the nut, all being arranged as represented, and the bar being marked, as shown, with divisions, letters, and
signs indicative of the various musical notes SAMUEL BRIEFLY BUT' JERWORTH.
