To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARRENT XV. FELTHOU- SEN, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefullmprovementsin Automatic Lubricating-Cups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to automatic lubricat ing-cups for use with grease, lubricating compounds, or heavy oils.
It consists, essentially, of a cup or receptacle provided with a self-packing piston fitted to slide up and down in said cup,'together with a spring to force said piston down upon the contents of the cup and feed the same until it has all been expelled from the cup. Its object is a cup for grease, heavy oils, and lubricatin g compounds, which may be automatically fed from the same by the continuous expansive force of a spring compressed when the cup is filled.
In the accompanying drawings like letters refer to the same parts in each figure.
Figure 1 is a medial vertical section of my improved device, showing the method of filling the cup and compressing the spring. Fig. 2 is a like View showing the cup in operation; and Fig. 3 shows a slight modification for regulating the tension of the spring.
A is the cup proper, cylindrical in general form, provided with the neck B, by means of which it is secured to the box or bearing to be lubricated, and externally threaded about its upper end to receive and engage with the in ternally-threaded cover E.
G is a piston adapted to slide up and down within the cup A, and provided with the stem N, about which'is placed the spiral spring S.

leads from the bottom of the cup orreceptacle A, through the neck B, to the bearing or box to be lubricated. To offer as little resistance as possible to the free discharge of the lubricant in the cup, the passage a is made tunnel-shaped at the top and gradually diverging below.
For the purpose of regulating the spring S, I may use in connection with my improved cup the long adjusting-nut M, bored out through the center to receive and form a bearing for the stem N'of the piston, and externally threaded to engage with a thread cut in the opening through the top of chamber F. The nut Mhas' a milled head projecting above said chamber F and a square-faced end resting against the top of spring S. By this means any desired tension may be secured and maintained in spring S by turning said nut M in or out.
My improved device operatesas follows: The
cup having first been attached by means of its 8 neck 13 to the bearing or box to be lubricated, the cover E is :removed, the spring S compressed, and the threaded shoulder D screwed up into chamber F, whereby the piston O is held up closely against said cover. is then filled with the lubricant L and the cover screwed down in place; The shoulder D is now unscrewed from chamber F, and the piston 0, thereby released, is forced by-spring S down upon the contents of the cup, which will be 5 gradually forced out thereby through the passage a as it is needed until the cup is emptied. Cups of this class as heretofore constructed The cup 0 have required a succession of turns of a screw operating the follower to completely expel the lubricant.
The advantage of a constantly-acting automatic spring-pressure which will feed the grease or compound when the cup is nearly empty as well as when it is full, and that with a single compression of the spring, is obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination, in alubricating-cup, of the receptacle A, piston 0, provided with the stem N, and threaded shoulder D, raised upon its upper face about said stem, spiral spring S, and cover E, provided with the cylindrical chamber F, for the reception of spring S and guidance of said stem, snbstantiallyas and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a hibricating-cup, the Combination of receptacle A, piston 0, provided with stem N, rising from the center of its upper side, and with the annular grooves or channels 0 0 about its bearing-face, spring S, cover E, provided with chamber F, for the reception of said I spring S, and adjusting-nut M, perforated to receive and furnish a bearing for the stem N, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. The combination, in alubricating-cnp, of the receptacle A, provided with neck 13 and feeding-passage a, diverging from a point near the top toward its base, piston 0, provided with stem N, spiral spring S, cover E, provided with chamber 1 and adjusting-nut M, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4-. In a lubricating-cup, the combination of receptacle A, piston 0, provided with stem N, spiral spring S, cover E, provided with chamber F, and perforated tension-nut M, for adjusting the tension of said spring and for the reception and guidance of stem N, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
