(Cl. 226187) This invention relates to a hold down roll assembly for a strip processing line and more particularly to a hold down roll assembly used in conjunction with a conductor roll in an electrolytic tinning line. In such a line it is necessary that the steel strip being coated with tin be held in close contact with the conductor roll and for this purpose a hold down roll is used which bears against the strip as it passes around the conductor roll. Hold down rolls in present use cannot readily be adjusted nor replaced while the line is in operation. Thus it is necessary to shut down the line in case of hold down roll failure, this being an expensive operation.
It is therefore an object of our invention to provide a hold down roll assembly for a strip processing line which provides for rapid adjustment and change without shutting down the line.
This and other objects will be more apparent after referring to the following specification and attached drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of the hold down roll assembly in a strip processing line;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged view looking toward the left end of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view looking toward the right end of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 4 is a view, similar to FIGURE 2, showing the parts in a different position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, reference numeral 2 indicates a tank or container for the electrolyte. A plurality of conductor rolls 4, only one of which is shown, is arranged above this tank. A beam 6 which supports the roll 4 extends from side to side of the tank 2. The apparatus so far described is that usually provided in a strip processing line. An adjustable bracket 8 is mounted on the beam 6 adjacent each end of the conductor roll 4. Bracket 8 includes a horizontal leg 18, a vertical leg 12 and downwardly extending spaced flanges 14. The leg has slots 16 therein for receiving cap screws 18 which are threaded into the beam 6. The leg 12 has threaded openings 20 therein for receiving cap screws 22. A look nut 24 is threaded on the cap screw 22. To adjust the position of the bracket 8 it is only necessary to loosen the cap screws 18 and nuts 24 and thread the cap screws 22 either in or out depending upon the desired direction of adjustment. The lock nuts 24 are then positioned against the flange 12 and cap screws 18 tightened. Alined holes 26 are provided in the flanges 14 for receiving a pin 28 on which is mounted an arm 30. The lower end of the arms 30 support a shaft 32. A pair of roll carriers 34 are mounted on the shaft 32, one on each end thereof on the inner side of the arm 38. A pair of hold down rolls 36a and 36b extend between and are rotatably mounted in the roll carriers 34. A twoarmed latch 38 is mounted on each arm 38 by means of a threaded pin 49. When the long arms of the latches 38 extend against their associated carriers 34 to hold them in place, one of the hold down rolls 36a or 36b will be positioned to bear against strip S as it passes around conductor roll 4. A second shaft 42 extends parallel to the pins 28 and is supported by brackets 44 mounted on the beam 6. A pair of links 46 are mounted on the shaft 42 one adjacent each end thereof. The free end of each link 46 is provided with a slotted or oversize hole 48 for Patented Aug. 22, 1961 receiving a pin 50 which also passes through a hole at the end of the short arm of the latch 38. A pair of levers 52 and 52 are keyed to the shaft 42 one adjacent each end thereof. An upwardly extending extension 54 is provided on the free end of lever 52 with a shackle 56 being attached to the upper end thereof. A spring rod 58 is pivotally mounted on levers 52 and 52 by means of a pin 60. The lower end of rod 58 extends downwardly into the bore of a spring seat 62 attached to the shaft 32. The lower end of the spring rod 58 has a slot 64 therein for receiving a bolt 66, thus providing an extensible connection between the spring rod 58 and spring seat 62. A spring 68 surrounds the shaft 58 with one end bearing against the top of spring seat 62 and the other end bearing against a washer 70 held in place on the spring rod 58 by means of a nut 72. An upwardly extending lever 74 is keyed to the shaft 42 at one end thereof. If desired the lever 74 may be made integral with lever 52. A bracket 76 attached to frame beam 78 carries one end of a turnbuckle 89. The other end of the turnbuckle 80 is connected to a pin 82 carried by the top end of lever 74. A square end 84 is provided on the end of the shaft 32 adjacent the lever 74.

While one embodiment of our invention has been shown and described it will be apparent that other adaptations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the following claims.
We claim:
1. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a hold down roll extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers, a spring seat connected to each end of said shaft, a spring rod associated with each of said spring seats, an extensible connection between each of said spring rods and its associated spring seat, a spring surrounding each spring rod and urging said spring rod and spring seat apart, and means for moving said spring rod toward said spring seat.
2. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, a second shaft mounted adjacent said arms with the arms being located between said second shaft and said horizontal roll, the axis of said second shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, apair of levers mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith one adjacent each end of said second shaft, each of said levers having a free end, a spring rod pivotally mounted on the free end of each of said levers and extending toward said first shaft, a spring seat connected to each end of said first shaft, an extensible connection between each of said spring rods and its associated spring seat, a spring surrounding each spring rod and urging said spring rod and spring seat apart, an upwardly extending lever mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith, and means for moving said last named lever around the axis of said second shaft.
3. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a. shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, a second shaft mounted adjacent said arms with the arms being located between said second shaft and said horizontal roll, the axis of said second shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, means for latching said roll carriers in position, a pair of levers mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith one adjacent each end of said second shaft, an extensible connection between each of said levers and said first named shaft, and means for rotating said levers about the axis of said second shaft.
4. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, a latch pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on each of said arms intermediate the length thereof, one end of each latch extending against the associated carrier to hold it in place with one of said hold down rolls against the strip on said horizontal roll, a second shaft mounted adjacent said arms with the arms being located between said second shaft and said horizontal roll, the axis of said second shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of links rotatably mounted on said second shaft one adjacent each end thereof, each of said links having a free end, means pivotally connecting the free end of each link to the second end of the adjacent latch, a pair of levers mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith one adjacent each end of said second shaft, an extensible connection between each of said levers and said first named shaft, and means for rotating said levers about the axis of said second shaft.
5. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, a latch pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on each of said arms intermediate the length thereof, one end of each latch extending against the associated carrier to hold it in place with one of said hold down rolls against the strip on said horizontal roll, a second shaft mounted adjacent said arms with the arms being located between said second shaft and said horizontal roll, the axis of said second shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of links rotatably mounted on said second shaft one adjacent each end thereof, each of said links having a free end, means pivotally connecting the free end of each link to the second end of the adjacent latch, a pair of levers mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith one adjacent each end of said second shaft, each of said levers having a free end, a spring rod pivotally mounted on the free end of each of said levers and extending toward said first shaft, a spring seat connected to each end of said first shaft, an extensible connection between each of said spring rods and its associated spring seat, a spring surrounding each spring rod and urging said spring rod and spring seat apart, and means for rotating said levers about the axis of said second shaft.
6. In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, said arms being mounted for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, a latch pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on each of said arms intermediate the length thereof, one end of each latch extending against the associated carrier to hold it in place with one of said hold down rolls against the strip on said horizontal roll, a second shaft mounted adjacent said arms with the arms being located between said second shaft and said horizontal roll, the axis of said second shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of links rotatably mounted on said second shaft one adjacent each end thereof, each of said links having a free end, means pivotally connecting the free end of each link to the second end of the adjacent latch, a pair of levers mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith one adjacent each end of said second shaft, each of said levers having a free end, a spring rod pivotally mounted on the free end of each of said levers and extending toward said first shaft, a spring seat connected to each end of said first shaft, an extensible connection between each of said spring rods and its associated spring seat, a spring surrounding each spring rod and urging said spring rod and spring seat apart, an upwardly extending lever mounted on said second shaft for movement therewith, and means for moving said last named lever around the axis of said second shaft.

In a strip processing line, the combination of a horizontal roll around which the strip passes, a pair of arms one adjacent each end of the said horizontal roll, a pivot support for each of said arms mounted above said horizontal roll, said pivot supports having a common axis and parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, said arms extending downwardly from said pivot supports, each of said arms having a free end, a shaft mounted on the free ends of said arms, the axis of said shaft being parallel to the axis of said horizontal roll, a pair of roll carriers mounted on said shaft for rotation therewith one adjacent each end of said horizontal roll, a pair of hold down rolls extending between and rotatably mounted in said roll carriers on opposite sides of said shaft, and resilient means urging one of said hold down rolls against the strip on said horizontal roll, the other of said hold down rolls being spaced from said horizontal roll above said shaft.
