ANDREl/V SPROUL, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRED O. STEVENS, OF ATTIGA, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,28t, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed February 21, 1884. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern for wagon end-gates.
Be it known that I, ANDREW SrRoUL, of Hannibal, in the county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lock for \Vagon End-Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for locking hinged or sliding ends of wagons in place.
The invention consists in a rod held to turn on the outer surface of the end-gate, the ends of the rod being bent over the ends of the gate, and being adapted to engage with studs or pins projecting from the side boards of the box.
The invention also consists in parts and de tails and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sideview of the rear part of awagon-box provided with my improved lock Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the box and a face view of the gate. Fig. 3 isa side View of the rear partof a wagon or box provided with a modification of my improved lock for wagon end-gates. Fig. 4. is a plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of a modification of the locking-rod.
In Figs. 1 and 2 my improved locking device is shown applied on a wagon-box provided with a hinged end-gat-e. A rod, A, having a downward bend,A, between the ends,is passed through staples or'eyes B on the rear surface of the end-gate 0, near the ends of the same, so that the rod can turn. The ends of the rod are bent over the ends of the gate parallel with the side boards, H, and are then bent upward to form hooks D. Pins or studs E- project flOlll the outer surface of the side boards, H, on which pins thehooks D can catch. WVhen the gate is locked, the bent part A of the rod A is swung down to rest against the surface of the end-gate, as shown. If the end-gate is to be swung down, the bent part A of the rod A is swung upward, whereby the hooks D are swung downward and disengaged from the pins or studs E.
If an upwardlysliding gate, 0, is provided, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4., the ends of the rod need not be provided with the hook ends D.
In place of passing the rod A through eyes or staples, it can be passed through apertures in battens F on the outer surface of the endgate, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. r
If desired, the rod A can be formed of two sections, the inner ends of which are provided with opposite screw-threads, and are screwed into the ends of a sleeve, G, whereby the rod can be lengthened or shortened, as may be desired, by turning the sleeve G.
The fastening or look rod can be lengthened by diminishing, the curve in the middle of the rod, and shortened by increasing the curve or bend of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 0 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a locking-rod for wagon end-gates, consisting of the rod A, provided with the bent hooked ends D and the bend A between said bent ends, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a wagon end-gate and studs on the body, of a rod pivoted on the outer surface of the end-gate, and provided with bent ends to engage the said studs, and with a bend between said bent ends, substan- 8o tially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a wagon end-gate,
C, and studs E on the body, of the pivoted rod A. having the bend A, and the bent hooked ends D, substantially as herein shown and de- 8 5 scribed.
4. The combination, with a wagon end-gate, of a rod held to turn on the same, which rod has its ends bent over the ends of the gate, and of projections on the outer surfaces of the side 0 boards, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with a wagon end-gate, of a rod pivoted to the outer surface of the gate, and provided with a central bend and 5 bent ends, the said rod being made in two sections adjustably connected together, substan' tially as herein shown and described.
ANDREXV SPROUL.
