MACHINE roe MAKING REINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,116, dated May 27, 1884. Application filed October 13, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, ORANGE A. DEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkville, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Reins, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
Thisinvention has relation to improvements in machines for making round reins and other portions of harness; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a clamping device applied to the machine where the pressure is required in forming the article, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, full yillustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my device applied to a machine for making reins,
&c., and Fig. 2 is a vertical cross'sectional view of the same, taken through the dotted line a: m, Fig. l.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a rectangular frame, at the lower end of which is provided a tube or receptacle, a, in which is placed a spring, I), which may be rubber or a coil-spring; and above the spring, and resting upon the same between the two vertical side bars, a c, of the rectangular frame, is a metal block, (I, which is provided on each side with lugs e e, that project through and play within the slots f f,
made in said side bars, as shown in the drawings. The upper face of said block is provided with a depression, 9, or seat for the outer end of lower jaw, h, of the machine. Near the upper portion of the frame the side bars are slotted, as at z, in which a rod, it, plays vertically, that is connected transversely to the upper jaw, Z, of the machine, and the upper crossbar, m, of the frame is provided with a screw-perforation to receive a thumbscrew, it, that bears upon the face at the end of the upper jaw, Z. About midway the frame the side bars are hinged, as atp; but, if desirable, the frame may be constructed otherwise.
It will be seen that my attachment can be readily applied to this class and similar machines, and when the thumb-screw is turned, thus putting pressure upon the jaws Z and h, and when the leather is drawn through the 5 machine, should it (theleather) be uneven, the elasticity of the spring will permit it being smoothly made, and different-size reins will pass through the machine, as the jaws of said machine accommodate themselves thereto through the medium of the spring attachment. This attachment can be easily and quickly applied and removed from the machine, and at the same time it is durable and cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination with the machine for making reins, having the pivoted jaws h and Z, the
rectangular frame A, having the receptacle a to receive the spring 6, the block d, having lugs e e, engaging the slots ff, and thumbscrew it, the whole operating as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ORANGE ARMSTRONG DEAN.
