Be it known that I, JAMEs N. WILsoN, of Higginsville, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Pulley-Reiter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of an adjustable clamp device of novel contrivance adapted to clamp Ona driving-pulley across the face and for ruiming the belt on the pulley, the said belter being designed for running on the driving-belts of' thrashing-machines and other ma` chines, which are apt to run off in consequence of' being long and crooked and running at high speed, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a top View of my improved pulley-belter. Fig. 2 is a side elevation 5 and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections, looking in opposite directions, on the line x w of Fig. 2.
I make an extension clamp consisting of jaw a, attached to the end of a bar, b, fitted to slide lengthwise in another bar, c, having a jaw, d, attached to it, and connect bar Z1 to an adjusting-screw, e, by a screw-tapped cross bar or plate, f, said screw being capable of sliding lengthwise a short distance, and hav'- ing a cam-lever, g, pivoted to the end, eXtending out through the bearing 7L in the end of bar c, for revolving said screw, and also for drawing it lengthwise to lighten the clamp. A coiled spring, i, is fitted on the screw between the collar j and the washer Z, to shift the screw back when released by the cam-lever. The jaw cl is also adjustable along the bar c to be secured at any point by means of' binding-screws L', which will in practice bein the form of hand-screws for convenience, and may be screwed into holes Z, made for them at suitable intervals along the sides of bar o. On the side opposite to the jaws a d, which may be hooked, as shown, the bars b c each have a flange, m, said flanges being at the respective extremities of the clamp. For using the clamp to run a driving-belt onto a pulley, the jaw d is first adjusted according to the width of the face of the pulley, so that when the clamp is placed across the face of the pulley-rim represented in section in dotted lines a, Fig. 2, the hooks a cl will hooi; around the edges of the rim. The hooks are then drawn up tight by the lever g to clamp the belter fast to the edges of the pulley. The belt o, dotted Fig. 2, is then placed over the flange m of that end of the clamp that projects to the side of the pulley from which the belt is to be runonto said pulley. Then the pulley is turned in the proper direction for running the belt on, which accomplishes the belting in the same manner as when the belt is held partly on the face of the pulley by hand, while the pulley is slowly turned, the belter lheilig a means of holding the belt more effectually, and so as to avoid thc severe and dangerous operations of holding by hand, particularly in the ease of strong and heavy belts. When the belt has run on the pulley, the belter will escape from under the belt into the open space between the two ranges of the belt, where it can be quickly detached by shifting the lever g to release the clamp and lifting it off the pulley. This can be done without stopping the pulley in the case of such large machinery as makes it desirable to turn the pulley slowly by the drivinglengine. p

rlhe form of the jaws a d represented in the drawings is best adapted for metal pulleys; but I propose to inake the jaws with iiat and roughened surfaces suitable for firmly gripping the sides of wooden pulleys when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--V 1. The improved pulley-belter, consisting of the extensible clainp a Z) c d, adjusting-screw c, and the flanges on, combined and arranged Vsubstantially as described.
2. The combination of the extensible clamp a Z) c d, adjustingscrew e, and the clampinglever g, substantially as described.
3. The adjustingfscrew e and clamping-lever g, in combination with the extensible clamp a b c d, 'said screw being fitted to slide in the bearing h, and having the reacting-spring i, substantially as described.
