ADOLPH ISAAOSEN, on NEW YORK, N. v.
EJECTOR FOR INSECT-POWDEFiS.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,693, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed November 8, 188d. (No model.)
The object of the invention is to provide an insect-duster consisting of a powder-receptacle and a blower, in which the receptacle is provided with'a screw-cap which connects with the receptacle at its largest diameter, and to which is soldered a nozzle. This nozzle, extending through the center of the cap, has a bayonet-connection with the nose of the bellows, and the portion thereof which projects within the receptacle is perforated to emit jets of air under pressure in different directions into the receptacle, and thus stir up and disintegrate the mass of powder, which is liable to pack closely in the receptacle. This construction provides for the ready filling of the receptacle through an aperture which is the whole diameter of the receptacle. A perforated diaphragm prevents the powder from packing in and choking the discharge passage or nozzle of the receptacle.
WVhat I consider the best manner of carrying out the invention is fully illustrated'in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, certain parts being broken away to better show the construction. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. The reservoir is shown detached and turned into position for filling.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both the figures Adesignatesa cylindrical receptacle, having one conical end, a, with a nozzle, a, as shown. Each end is provided with a screwthread, a, which engages a similar internal thread in the cap'B or end piece, a. Projecting through the center of the end cap, B,
is a nozzle, 0, which is secured to the properly-tapered wood nose D of a suitable bellows, F, by a bayonet-joint at c. The portion of this nozzle 0 which projects within the body of the powder in the receptacle A is perforated at several different points, as seen at c, to provide a multiplicity of jets of air, which serve tostir 'up the powder. A perforated diaphragm, E, is located in the portion a of the receptacle, and serves to prevent the powder from packing in the nozzle a. I provide a valve, f, of leather or other cheap and durable material, secured by a screw to the wood of the bellows-nozzle D. This prevents the powder from being drawn backward into the bellows. The receptacle, as thus constructed, allows the ready insertion of the powder by detaching the receptacle from the bellows, by detaching nozzle 0 from nozzle D, or, preferably, by the removal of the cap B, to which is secured by solder, at b, the nozzle 0. Either method gives a large opening to receive the powderrapidly and without scattering it. When the device is in use, the multiplicity of jets of air from the apertures c agitates the powder, however it lies. r
I provide exchangeable tips a, which are connected to the conical end a. by screw-threads. Whenever desired, the tip a maybe unscrewed from its connection with the nozzle and a new one substitutedhaving a'dift'erent size or a different form of discharge-orifice. One advantage, due to the tips a being conveniently detachable, is the facility it affords for emptying them. There is always aliability, particularly with the finest-pointed tips, that sufficient powder will get past the diaphragm E to clog them. In such case they are readily unscrewed and emptied.
I do not confine the invention to the use of insect-powder, strictly so called, or to its use ininjecting powder into cracks and recesses in buildings and furniture. I can supply parisgreen or analogous materal in a powdered c011- dition to the reservoir and use a large nozzle for the discharge anddust powder upon the surfaces of plants in the fields, or in various other situations where a powder is to be dis-. tributed.
I claim as my invention- In combination with a readily-detachable my hand, at New York city, New York, this current-inducing means, as F D, and a pow- 29th day of October, 1883, in the presence of der-reccptacle having athread, a the cap B, two subscribing witnesses.
having tube 0, provided with perforations c, ADOLPH ISAACSEN. 5 and bayonet-joint c, as and for the purposes \Vitnesses:
