UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
WILLIAM L. BOVYER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
. MlTER-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,664, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed September .31, 1883. (N model.) i
' of which the following is a specification, the accompanying drawings being referred to as a part thereof.
My invention relates to an improved miterbox for carpenters"and joiners use, to facilitate the work of cutting and fitting irregular moldings and paneling.
Inthe drawings referred to, Figure 1 is a top View, Fig. 2 a front view, and Fig.3 an
end view, of a double or right and left hand box constructed after my invention.
In its simplest form my improved box is produced by joining two boxes or troughs, A B, at right angles, and fixingat the corner or junction of the parts a swinging saw-guide, O, to intersect the angle and move in the arc of a circle from a center, 0, outside of the angle. A binding-screw, d, serves to fix the guide Gin the desired position across the corner of the box. For general use, however, I prefer a double box, which I produce by joining three sides or troughs, A, A, B, and D, together, so that they form three sides of a square, the corners being true right angles, and then placing a swinging saw-guide at each corner, to afford facilities for cutting right and left hand joints without turning or reversing the molding. The troughs or rests for the molding have stops or raised outer edges, 6 e, that are cut away at the corner or junction to give room for the swing of the saw-guide. A wedgeshapeplate, F, is set into the corner, with its face flush with the surface of theparts A, B, or D, and its point or acute end projecting be- I yond the corner through the gap between the raised edges 6 e.- A saw-guide, O', consisting of a block with a guide-slot, O, for the saw, and with a cut-away aperture, 0, to let the molding through, is attached to the outer acute end of the plate F by an upright pin or stud, 0 upon which as a center the block 0 is free to swing over the plate F. A screw-threaded stud upon the bottom of the block, at the inner end, is let through a curved slot in the plate to receive a thumb-nut on the under side, as a means of locking the block to the plate when set at any desired angle with respect to the parts A B. The saw-guide G then swings upon the center 0 midway between the two holding-surfaces AB, and is set to any given angle with either side, A or B. When adj usted to give the desired bevel or angle to a molding strip laid in one box or rest, the guide also gives the complement of the angle by its position with respect to the other box or rest, this being afforded by the arrangement of the two boxes at a right angle and the swinging saw-guide at the intersection of the two parts. The opposite ends of a strip of molding intended for one side of a panel having parallel sides can be cut with accuracy by setting the guide 0 at the desired angle with one box, as A, and then cutting the opposite end of the strip by setting-it in the other box, B.
A box with three rests, A B D, for the moldings, and with two saw-guides combined as rep resented in Fig. 1 of the drawings, will enable all the four corners of any panel having its opposite sides parallel to be accurately and exthe guides. The wedge-shaped plate F fits snugly in a correspondingly-shaped seat, and
is readily tightened therein, owing to its inclined sides.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a miter-box, the combination of two sides joined at a right angle with a triangular plate, as F, placed at the juncture thereof, having its base set to face the inside of the box, and a saw-guide pivoted and adjusted on said plate, substantially as set forth.
2. A miter-box consisting of the sides A B D, joined together to form three sides of a square, with their j unctures secured by triangular plates F, having the saw-guides Gpivot- WM. L- BOVYER. [n s] Witnesses:
