4 Claims. (Cl. 197-133) The present invention consists of an attachment for a 2,971,628 Ce Patented Feb. 14, 1961 I is of extremely simple, cheap, foolproof construction are described in detail hereinafter.
typewriter carriage adapted to mount in a visibly observable location a typing copy member bearing copy which is to be typed, and adapted to carry and dispense upon demand to a typewriter platen a thin-sheet typing medium in the form of a continuous spirally wound strip which, in one preferred form, may comprise a plurality of individual labels, each of which is to have typed thereon certain data which may be carried by the typing copy member. The plurality of individual labels may be of a type wherein they are in edge-to-edge relationship and are provided with tearable separation or perforation means therebetween whereby individual labels may be torn off of the remainder of the strip, when desired, or may be of a type comprising a plurality of individual labels carried by an underlying continuous base mounting'strip. In this latter form, the base mounting strip preferably, though not necessarily, may adhesively carry the labels spaced therealong.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a copy mounting and label holding and dispensing attachment for a typewriter carriage of the type generally de scribed above, which includes a panel member (preferably of thin-sheet, lightweight material, such as molded plastic material, or the like, although not specifically so limited) provided with mounting means preferably consisting of pressure-sensitive adhesive means adjacent the bottom thereof and adapted to be pressed into adhesive mounting relationship with respect to a portion of a typewriter carriage whereby to effectively mount said panel member in upstanding relationship with respect thereto with the front surface of said panel member in a position visibly observable by a typist during typing use of a typewriter slidably mounting the typewriter carriage.
his a further object to provide an attachment of the character set forth above, wherein said panel member is provided with copy member mounting means cooperable with a thin-sheet copy member whereby to effectively mount same in a position visibly observable by a typist during typing use of a typewriter slidably mounting the typewriter carriage.
j It is a further object to provide an attachment of the character referred to above, wherein said panel member is provided with holding and carrying means adapted to removably hold and carry a continuous spirally wound strip of material including a typing medium, which may,
in one preferred form, comprise a plurality of separable labels (although not specifically so limited), and to dispense same to the platen of the typewriter as needed during typing of selected copy thereon by the typewriter.
It is a further object to provide an attachment of the character set forth above, which may be made of extremely simple, cheap, molded, stamped, or otherwise formed construction, preferably of thin-sheet plastic,
:metal, fiber, wood product compositions, paper-like composition materials, or other suitable materials.
It is a further object to provide an attachment of the character set forth in any of the preceding objects, which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of one illustrative embodiment of the present invention shown mounted with respect to a fragmentary portion of a slidable typewriter carriage, which it is understood is slidably carried by a typewriter (not shown, since such arrangements are well-known in the art).
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken in the direction of the arrows 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear fragmentary view of the apparatus of Fig. 1 and shows the exemplary embodiment of the present invention mounted on a portion of a typewriter carriage which has a center part broken away for reasons of drawing clarity.
Fig. 4 is a smaller-scale perspective view as seen from a vantage point above and at the right of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of a slightly different form of typing medium adapted to be carried and dispensed by the attachment of the present invention.
Generally speaking, the attachment of the present invention may be said to comprise a panel member provided with mounting means for removably mounting the panel member upon a portion of a typewriter carriage in upstanding relationship with respect thereto, with said panel member being provided with copy member mounting means cooperable with a thin-sheet copy member for mounting same in a conveniently viewable position for a typist, and with said panel member being further provided with holding and carrying means adapted to removably hold and carry a spirally wound strip of material comprising a typing'medium and being adapted to dispense same to the platen of the typewriter upon demand as required for typing desired copy on various of the labels.
In the specific'form of the invention illustrated, the panel member referred to generally above takes one specific form wherein it is of substantially rectangular shape, as indicated generally at 10, and is preferably made of molded thin-sheet, lightweight plastic material, although not specifically so limited.
In the specific example illustrated, the mounting means generally referred to above takes the form of adhesive material, which in this exemplary embodiment, may be pressure-sensitive adhesive material (although other types of adhesive material may be employed) indicated at 11 and carried by a substantially flat strip portion 12 at the bottom of the rear surface of the panel member 10 and adapted for use in removably mounting said panel member 10 upon a substantially flat portion 13 of a typewriter carriage, a portion of which is indicated generally at 14. with the panel member 10 being in upstanding relationship with respect to the typewriter carriage 14, although angularly inclined from perpendicular orientation in the example illustrated, and with the front surface of the panel member being in a position conveniently visibly observable by a typist during typing use of a typewriter (not shown) slidably mounting the typewriter carriage, shown fragmentarily at 14.
It will be noted that the mounting of the panel 10 is accomplished entirely in the example shown by the adhesive material 11 engaging the corresponding flat portion 13 of the typewriter carriage 14. However, various other mounting means of adhesive 'or mechanical type may be employed for this purposewithin the scope of the present inyentionas will be readily evident.
In the specific example illustrated, the copy member mounting 'means generally-referred-to above takes one specificform whereinit is-carried by the front surface of the panel member and. is indicatedgenerally at as comprising a transverse member 16. carried by the front surface of the panel memberlt) adjacent the bottom thereof and closely forwardly spaced with respect to the front surface of the panel member 10 whereby to define therebetween an upwardly open copy-member-receiving slot 17 into which a bottom edge 18 of'a copy member, indicated generally at 19, may bev inserted and retained. The copy member mounting means, indicated generally at 15, also includes a copy member edge-aligning straight edge member 20 carried by the front surfaceof the panel member 10 at the left edge thereof in a position such asito be adapted to abut a side edge 21 of the thin-sheet copy member 19whereby to proper-ly position the copy member so that the text of copy carried by the front surface of the copy member 19 will be appropriately positioned so as to be conveniently viewable by a typist using the machine for typing said copy: mate-rial onto various ones of a plurality. of labels which will be referred to hereinafter.
In the specific example illustrated, the holding; and carrying means generally referred. to above-takes one specific form, indicated generally at 22, including two horizontally spaced rearwardly directed members23 provided with hearing slot-defining portions 24'adapted' to removably receive opposite ends 25 of a center core-mounting spindle 26 carrying thereon a spirally wound typing medium, indicated generally at 27, consisting of a plurality of separable labels 28 joined togetherin edge-to-edge relationship by tearable separation perforation means 29, and with the typing medium having a free'end portion 30 extending downwardly and forwardly through a horizontal slot means 31 communicating the front and rear surfaces of the panel member immediately above the portion thereof fastened by the adhesive material 11 to the similar portion 13 of the carriage means 14, and with said free end 31 of the label strip then extending downwardly along the front surface of the member 13 and underneath the typewriter roller or platen. 32 and thence partially therearound in clockwise direction and under the idler roller 33, whereby to place the portion indicated at 34 in conventional typing position suitable for impact by any of the multiple keys of a conventional typewriter (not shown, since such arrangements are well-known in the art).
It will be readily understood that, in use, the entire panel member 10 moves with the typewriter carriage 14 and that whatever material is carried by the copy member 19, such as names and addresses, prescriptions, or the like, may then be typed onto individual ones of the labels 28, as desired, each of which may then be separated along the separation perforation lines 29 for aflixation figures and specifically described hereinbefore. Rather, the real invention is intended to include substantially equivalent constructions embodying the basic teachings and inventive concept of the present invention.
