HEAD- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,779, dated April 15, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, FRANK H. PLUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Henniker, in the county of Merrimac andState of New Hampshire, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests; and "l do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to theletters and iigures of reference markedthereon ,which form apart of this specication.

The object of my invention is to provide an attachable or detachable head-rest for the back of. reclining or other suitable chairs,

,which shall be'adjustable vertically or back and forward, the head-piece being pivotechto tip freely to any position the occupant of the chair may desire.

My invention consists in details of construction,whichwill be described below,and pointed out in the claims. y

ln the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partlyin dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the head-rest, reversing the chair. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the side and rack bars.

vThe headpiece H, which may be of any proper material or upholstered, is pivoted in the slots s s of the side bars, S S', by means of short bolts b b on 'each side.v Only the ends of these bolts are shown in the drawings, but they are screw-threaded to receive thumbnuts t t. The slots in the side bars are long, to permit the vertical adjustment of the headpiece to the height of the person. `Nhen the desired vertical adjustment is gained, the thumb nuts are slightly tightened, and the i head-piece is free to tip back or forward on the pivots formed by the short bolts, and when tipped to the desired position the thumb-nuts are firmly tightened. The side bars, S S', extend down from each side oi' the head-piece within the sides of the chair-back, and are lpivoted by screws Z Z5 at their lower ends.

Thus said bars are free to move bach and forward, ormay be inserted or removed at pleas- 5c ure.

Near the center of the side bars is made a recess. (See r, Fig. 3.) This is large enough to receive and give free play to a rack-bar,B.

Said rack-bar is pivoted at p to move freely up and down. Itis somewhat curved, and extends back to engage with the top of a crossbar in the chair-back. As the bars B B have several square recesses or grooves, g g', on the under side,this engagement is easily effected, 6o and in such a way as to fasten the rack and' side bars in the position' desired merely by raising and lowering the former by the corda,l attached to the 4ends of said bars, as shown in Figs. l and 2.

The chair proper is shown in dotted lines in the drawings. As this forms no part of my invention, it'needs no description, and it isA merely introduced to show how my head-rest is applied to a reclining-chair in the present 7o instance.

Though l have shown the head-rest attached inside of the chair-back, it is evident that it could be placed outside; but one of the crossbars in the chair-back would have to be extended to engage with the rack-bars.

My head-rest has the following advantages:

VIt may be attached or removed at will by taking out the pivots at the lower ends of the side bars and loosening the cord at the end of 8o the 'rack-bars. It is adjustable vertically forward and back, the head-rest proper being free at all times to be tipped, as the position of the head may require, by loosening the thumb-screws slightly. These several adjust- 8 5 ments may be made without getting out of the chair. lt may be applied to any recliningchair,with slight alteration of the latter, if any.
