Description
E.A.LELAND.
PAINT CAN.
Patented Aug. 14, 1860.
' if desired, a form a shoulder, a,- or it may beturned over UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
EDWIN A. LELAND, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR- TO HIMSELF AND JOHN BENSON, or sAME PLACE;-
PAINT-CAN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,651; dated August 14, 1360.
To all whom it' may concern Be it known that I, E. A. LELAND, of Brookl vn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented'certain 'new and useful Improvements iii Cans and Canisters for lut ting up Paint, Fruit, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of-this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a. vertical central section of one of my canisters when closed. Fig. 2 is a' similar section of a can constructed according to my invention before the top is fastened down. Fig. 3 is a similar section of one of my canisters.
Similar letters of referencein. the three views indicate corresponding parts.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation with reference to the drawings. v
A represents a band composed of sheet-zine or some other soft and flexible metal, the lower edge of which is firmly attached, by soldering or in any other convenient manner, around the outside of the usual neck or lip 'of the can 13, so that a can thus provided with an extra neck or lip, A, may be said to be doublelipped. The inner neck or lip may be turned inward,
s shown in Figs. land 3, so as-to a strengthening-wire, b, placed on the inside of the inner neck or lip, so as to form a shoulder, 0, as shown in Fig. 2. The said shoulder, whether made as shown at a or e, forms a support for the cover 0. The latter is simply a flat disk of-metahmade of a diameter to .pass snugly within the outer .lip, A, so as to rest upon the inner lip upon the shoulder a or 6. After placing the cover C within-the lip A, as
described, the upper edge of said lip is bent over so as to press upon and seal the edge of the cover 0,
and thus tightly inclose the coning two hooked ends,
.down again and againon the same can by means of the same ring.
- The bail D is secured to the can B by passd, of the same through, holes f in the sides of thecamas shown in Fig; 2; Said holesf are protected from the insi'de by plates 6, that are soldered to the sides of the can. By these means the bailis firmly secured and the sides of the can are sealed up perfectly tight.
I am awarethat in Patent No. 24,748 a'can' is shown having a cover composed of a disk of soft metal soldered to a central disk of harder metal, the outer edge of thesoft disk being also soldered to the lip of the can, so. that the cover may be removed by cutting through and around the soft metal. I disclaim, therefore, the broad idea of using soft metal in the manner described in said patent.
Having-thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The constructio 'of'the can with two lips, as shown, one of which is formed into a shoulder, a or e, to support the cover 0, while the other lip, A, composed of a soft flexible metal, is bent over upon and made to seal the cover 0 when the latter is to be closed, but'when the can is to be opened the said lip A is bent up to a perpendicular position, so that the covermay be removed, all without any soldering or cutting, as and forthe purpose specified.
EDWIN A. LELAND.
