SAFETY-CATCH FOR ELEVATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,511, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Ansnsr J. BECKER and JOSEPHB. YOUNG, both of Mount Carmel, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Catch for Elevators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new'and improved safety-catch for elevatorcars and cages used in mines, 850., for the purpose of catching the car or cage in case the rope breaks, and thus prevent the car from dropping.
The invention consists in the combination, with an elevator-car, of a frame held on the same and supported by springs, which frame carries shafts provided on the ends with cam or eccentric disks, adapted to engage with the upright guide posts or bars in the well. The suspension-rod of the cage is connected by chains with the frame, so that when the hoisting-cable breaks the cam or eccentric disks will be pressed against the guideposts and lock the cage or car in place.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a face view of an elevator-cage provided with our improved safety-catch. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view, parts being broken out.
An iron frame, A, rests on springs 13, on the top cross-bar, C, of the elevator cage or car D, and the said frame is provided at each end with arms E, projecting in opposite directions, in which aims arocking shaft, F, is
40 journaled parallel with the frame A.
On each end of each shaft F an eccentric disk or cam, G, is rigidly mounted, between which earns or disks G the vertical guide-bar H for the car or cage passes. Each shaft F is provided at each end with an arm, J, each of which arms is connected by connect-ingrods K, pivoted in the ends with shafts L, journaled in the cage-frame and parallel with the cross-bar C. The elevator car or cage issuspended by means of a chain, rope, or cable from a rod or bar, M, passing through the frame A and cross-bar C, and provided with a head, M, on its lower end. Chains or ropes N, secured to the lower end of the bar or rod M, pass over pulleys Ov on the shafts L ,and have their opposite ends secured to the side barsof the frame A.
The operation is as follows: If the car is suspended from the cable, the bar M pulls upward and pulls on the chains N, which are of such length that when the knob M rests against the bottom edge of the bar C the frame A-will be pressed on the top of the bar C and the springs B will be compressed. The camdisks or ec entric-disks Gthen hang down vertically. If the cable breaks, the springs B expand, throw the frame A upward in relation to the bar C, and thus bring the camsurfaces of the disks G in contact with the bars H, the friction then moving the camdisks farther in the direction of the arrows, and thereby the cam-disks are jammed firmly against the bars H, and the car or cage is locked in place and prevented from dropping.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an elevator car or cage, of a frame carrying shafts provided with cam or eccentric disks on the ends, which disks are adapted to engage with the upright guide-posts in the well, springs adapted to be compressed upon applying strain to the cage, suspending bar or rod, and of chains extending from the said frame over suitable pulleys to the rod or bar from which the cage is suspended, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with an elevator car or cage, of the frame A, the springs B, under the same, the shafts F, held in the frame A, the cam or eccentric disks G on the ends of the same, and the chains N, extending from the suspension bar or rod M, over pulleys O IOC
