The corners of the former in its revolutions raise the hammer L, and as the revolution of the former is quite rapid the hammer will, when the corners of the former move downward and leave the face of the hammer, drop upon the iiat sides of said former, flattening the wire against the sides of the former. The hammer when it strikes the former rebounds a slight distance, andbefore it can again descend the next succeeding corner of the former will strike the face of the hammer and again fully raise it. This blow which the ascending corner of the former gives to the hammer has the effect of bending the wire around said corner, and as the wire at this corner rubs along the face of the hammer in raising it the wire will be forced sharply around said corner. It will be noticedthat asthehammer is pivotally connected to the standard Z it will have while being raised a slight horizontal movement in a direction contrary to that in which the former is rotated. Thismovement'aidsinbendingthe wire around the corner which is raising the hammer. After the former has been filled with wire, the machine is stopped, the bearingarm f is swung to one side, and the former removed from the shaft B. The divided nut is then opened, the shaft B is pushed inward the proper distance, and another former is secured on the shaft, when the machine is again ready for operation.
The iianges Z2 of the standards are necessary only on the outside of the wings of the hammer, to prevent the hammer from being carried along with the former as it is forced outward by the threads on the shaft working through the nut C. These flanges might be dispensed with; but I prefer to employ them, as they relieve the armsn of any lateral strain. The threads of the shaft and nut are given such a pitch that the former is thrust outward at each revolution a little more than the diameter of the wire. By thus feeding forward the former I remove all liability of one coil of the wire being wound upon the preceding one, which is liable to occur when the former and the devices from which the wire is drawn are stationary.
I am aware that it is old to use a heavy pivoted lever in connection with a revolving former; but in such'a device the wire is4 caused to conformwith the shape of the former by a continuous uniformv pressure, whereas in my machine the wire is subjected to sharp blows, which are effective to bend the wire beyond the limit of elasticity, and consequently give it a permanent set. After the'former is removed from the shaft B, the bent wire is stripped from the former, and is cut in one of its sides, thereby producing a blank ready to be incorporated in the rim of a pan.
Formers having shapes other than that shown may be used; but in case a round former is used some device should be added thereto which will operate to raise the hammer in a manner similar to the corners of the former shown.,
I claim herein as my inventionl l. In a machine for bending wire, a rotating former, in combination with a drop-hammer, said parts being so constructed and arranged that the wire is made to conform to the shape of the former by a series of blows, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for bending wire, a rotating and longitudinally-mov able former,in com*- bination with a drop-hammer, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for bending wire, the former H and the shaft B, threaded and grooved at one end, in combination with the gear-wheel D, splined to said shaft, divided nut C, and means for opening and closing the divided nut, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for bending Wire,the former H, detachably secured to the shaft -B, in combination with the swinging bearing-arm f, substantially as set fort-h.
5. In a machine for bending wire, the former H, secured to the rotating and longitudinallymovable shaft B, in combination lwith the tension device o and the straightening device p, substantially as set forth.
6. In a machine for bending wire, the rotating and longitudinally-movable former H, in combination with the drop-hammer L, having the Wings m, the guide-standards l Z, having the flanges Z, and the arms n, substantially as set forth. v
7. In a machine for bending wire, the drophammer L, having side wings, m, in combination with the standards l l', so arranged as To allow a'slight horizontal movement to the hammer during lits vertical reciprocation, the arms n, pivotally connected to thehammer and the standard Z, and the former, substantially as set forth.
