HAMB ATTACHMENT. No. 296,193. Paten-ted Apr. l, 1884.

a@ I HANIE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,193, dated April 1, 1884.
Application iled October 30, 1883.
b @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, OGDEN P. LETonwonTH, of the city of Butlalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Haines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction ofthe haine-staple to which the hanne-tug is attached, and has for its object to avoid the weakening ofthe body of' the haine by the two holes which are ordinarily formed through the body of the haine for the reception oi' the two legs of the haine-staple.
My invention consists, to that end, of a haine staple or loop secured to the body of the hanne by a single bolt or rivet, as will be hereinafter fully set fort-h, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation ol' a portion ot' a haine provided with myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. section in line a: fr, Fig. l.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several iigures.
A represents the haine; B, the hanie staple or loop, and C the hook to which the breaststrap ring D is attached.
F represents a clasp plate or frame, which extends from the base of the staple B around the front portion of the hame, and G represents the bolt or rivet whereby the staple is secured to the haine. The clasp or frame F is cast in one piece with the staple or loop B, and provided between the legs of the staple or loop with an opening, f, and the inner side of the haine is provided with a similar countersnnlr opening, f. The rivet G is passed through the openingsff ofthe frame F, and through an opening formed in the haine A and the metallic haine-strap a, and riveted over at one end, whereby the frame F and Fig. 3 is a horizontal (No model.)
haine staple or loop B, cast on the same, are iirxnly secured to the haine A. The hook G is cast on the frame F, and rests with its open end against the front side of the haine A, whereby the jaw ol' the hook is closed after the frame has been applied to the haine and the breast-strap ring D confined in the hook C.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the staple or loop is secured to the haine by a single bolt or rivet, thereby avoiding the forniation of two bolt-holes through the body of the haine at the point where .the draft is applied to the haine, and where the greatest strength is required. The frameF extends around the front side of the haine in line with the opening formed through the same, and con1pensates for the reduction in strength ofthe harnebody, caused bythe formation of the bolt-hole through the saine, and forms a very secure fastening for the hanie staple or loop and inaterially increases the strength of the haine at this point.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with ahanie, of a-harne staple or loop, a frame or clasp extending from the base of the haine staple or loop to the op.- posite side of the haine, and a bolt or rivet whereby said frame and staple or loop are secured to the haine, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a harne, of a haine staple or loop, a frame or clasp extending from the base of the staple or loop to the opposite side of the haine, a hook adapted to receive the breast-strap ring, and cast on said clasp or frame, and a bolt or rivet whereby said clasp and staple or loop are secured to the haine, substantially as set forth.
O. P. LETGHXVORTH.
