`The object ofA this invention is to facilitate i the baling of cotton, moss,`hay, and other substances, and also to promote convenience in operating baling-presses.
" The invention consists in'a baling-press `constructed, with slotted ends provided with "ratchet-bars at the sides of the slots, and fuli crum-bars suspended near said" ends.
The press-box is provided with afollower strengthd ened by a truss, and carrying spring-held catch-bars to engage with the ratchet-bars.

The parts of the ends of the press weakened by the slots are further strengthened byseparable crossbarsNV, which are recessed upon their lower sides to fit upon the tops of the said ends, andwhich are removed when the follower is to be put on or taken off. The end cross-bars, A', ofthe frame A are placed at a lower level than the side cross-bars, A2, ofthe `said frame, so that the face ofthe follower K can be loweredbelow the lower edge of the side casings, B, without making the said follower too deep. The ends of the center bar of the follower K project through the slots in the ends of the press, and the middle part of the said bar is strengthened by the truss-rod L,
the middle part of which passes over the trussblock M, and its end parts pass through and are secured to the said centerbar.
To the projecting ends of the center bar of the follower K are attached bands N, upon which, at the tops of the said ends, are formed ribs or projections O, for the operating-levers P to engage with when placed above the said ends.
To the bands N ,below the ends of the center bar ofthe follower K, are hinged rings Q,

to receive the levers P when placed below the said ends.
Into the rings Q are hooked open links R, provided with rings S, to receive the levers P when the follower is at the top of the press.
To the upper part of the ends of the pressframe A are attached projecting arms T, to the outer ends of which are hinged the upper ends of the fulcrum-bars U, which have crosspinsV attached to them, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or inclined slots Y formed in them, as shown in Fig. 4, to serve as fulcrums to the levers P. The lower ends of the fulcrum-bars U are connected with the base-frame of the press by link-connections X or other suitable means. The engaging ends of the levers P are made'of iron, and slotted to receive the edge of the fulcrum-bars U, and are curved upward slightlyT to take a secure hold upon the fulcrum-pins V. j
Upon the lower sides of the engaging ends of the levers P are formed three (more orless) cross-grooves, P, to receive the ribs O or the rings Q or S, to prevent the said levers from slipping when power is applied to them, and to allow the short arms ofthe levers P to lbe lengthened when less power and more speed are required, and shortened when more power and less speed are required. In case the slotted fulcrum-bars U Vbe used, the forked ends of the levers P should be provided with stationary cross-pins to enter the slots V', and thus engage withthe said fulcrum-bars. Vith this construction, when a sufficient quantity of the substance to be baledhas been placed in the baling-boX,the follower K is put on and forced down below the level of the top of the press, the strengthening-bars W' are arranged in place, and the links It are hooked into the rings Q. The levers P are then inserted in the rings S and operated until the follower K has been lowered sufficiently to bring the to the parts of the center bar of the follower K that pass through the slots in the ends of the press.` To the outer ends `of the catchbars Z are attached small hooks b, upon which are hooked the outer ends of spiral springs c. The inner ends of the springs c are attached to the truss-rod L, or other suitable support. Vith this construction, as the follower K is forced downward by operating the levers P the ends of the cross-heads of the catch-bars Z slide over the teeth of the ratchet-bars Y and engage with the said teeth when the levers are being adjusted for another stroke, so
as to hold the follower against being forced detached, and the catch-bars Z are drawn outward far enough to clear the teeth of the ratchet-bars Y; or the catch-bars Z can be drawn outward without ydetaching thesprings c and secured in place by pins passedthrough holes in the said catch-bars and into holes in the center bar of the follower K.

The plates d, after the balingbox has been filled with material for a bale, are inserted between the ends of the lower part of the follower K and the ends of the press, with their upper ends against the lower side of the projecting end parts of the center bar of the said follower, so that the said plates will be forced downward by the said follower, and will cover the parts of the slotsin the ends ofthe press, to prevent the material being compressed from being forced' outward through the said slo'ts. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A baling-press constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the press-box having-slotted ends and provided with ratchet-bars Y and fulcrum-bars U, the follower K, havingtruss L M and provided with springheld catch -bars Z, and bands N, having ribs O and rings Q, and the levers P, having slotted and recessed forward ends, as set forth.
2. In a baling-press, the combination, with the press-frame A and the center bar of the,

ofthe separable links and rings R S, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the levers can be applied at a distance below the said center bar of the follower when beginning the pressing operation, as set forth.
4. In a baling-press, the combination, with the slotted ends of the press and the center bar of the follower, of the ratchet-bars Y, on both sides of the slots, and the T-shaped catchbars Z, sliding in bearings on the ends of the center bar of the follower K, and springs c, secured to the follower and slides, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the follower will be held in place while adjusting the levers for another stroke, as set fortha ANDREV JOHNSON.
