Description

Nov. 8, 1960 M. L. GREENBLATT BRUSHES Filed April 27, 1959 'I' 'DI' I all-mgl!" Ll l IV/b/I A United States Patent O BRUSHES Morris L. Greenhlatt, Roslyn Heights, NX., assignor to Simon Greenblatt 8: Sons, Inc., New York, NX., a corporation of New York Filed Apr. 27, 1959, Ser. No. 809,077
1 Claim. (Cl. 15-187) This invention relates to brushes and has particular reference to clothes, hair and bath brushes and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a brush which is so constructed that the same may be produced in quantities by a molding operation with all parts of the brushes of integral construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a brush having a relatively thin back with a downturned edge portion extending peripherally thereabout and with strengthening ribs on the under side of the back whereby considerable pressure may be applied in the use of the brush without distorting the back thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a brush with bristles which taper from the under side of the back of the brush to the outer ends thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a brush with flexible strap means connected with the back at the opposite ends thereof which forms a sheath with the back of the brush for tightly securing the brush on a hand of the user.
Still another object of the invention is to provide ilexible strap means of said character which is adjustable for varying the length thereof whereby the same may be adjusted to snugly tit the hand of the user.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a brush constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the strap ends in open relation.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof with the strap ends closed.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the brush is constructed for manufacturing in quantities by a molding operation with all parts thereof of unitary construction. The brush comprises a back 11 which is formed with a downturned rim 12 extending peripherally thereabout and with a plurality of ribs 13, 14 and 15 on the under side thereof. The ribs 13 extend transversely of the back while the ribs 14 and 15 extend angularly with reference to the ribs 13 and are connected therewith to thereby strengthen the back whereby substantial pressure may be applied to the back in use thereof without distorting the back.
The brush is provided with bristles 16 formed integrally with the back and which are closely spaced throughout the area thereof within the downturned rim 12. The bristles are of tapered formation, the inner end portions thereof adjacent the back being relatively stiff and increasing in flexibility toward the outer ends thereof.
In order to retain the brush on the hand of the user, particularly a bath brush which becomes wet and slippery when in use, the brush is provided with a strap member consisting of releasably connected tiexible strap ends 17 and 18 which are connected with the back 11 at the opposite ends thereof and have interengageable means 19 connecting the strap ends together to thereby provide a.
ICC
loop extending over the back between which and the back the hand of the user may be received with the connected strap ends tightly fitting the hand for retaining the brush on the hand.
The interengageable means 19 is adjustable for varying the size of the loop so as to t the hand of the user and for this purpose the strap end 17 is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced holes 20. The opposite side edges of said strap end is cut away to provide shoulders 21 adjacent the free end thereof. The strap end 18 is formed with transversely extending parallel slots 22 in the widened end portion 23 thereof and with a lug 24 on the under side of said strap end between said slots for selective engagement of said lug in any one of said holes 20 when the strap ends are connected by receiving the strap end 17 through the slots 22 and under the lug 24.
The back 11 is of general oval shaped formation in plan and the strap ends 17 and 18 are integrally connected with the back at the opposite ends thereof along parallel lines 25 and 26 which are located on opposite sides respectively of the longitudinal medial line through the back. The strap ends being connected with the back in this manner, the loop formed thereby extends across the back 11 in angular relation to the longitudinal medial line thereof and when the hand of the user grasps the back 11, the loop extends transversely across the back of the hand adjacent the knuckles and with the forenger and little finger disposed substantially parallel with the lines 25 and 26. This positions the fingers whereby they may conveniently grasp the forward portion of the downturned rim 12.
The brush is produced by molding operation from synthetic material such as polyethylene and while the preferred form of the invention is shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications which fall within the purview of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In a hand brush, a back of general oval shaped formation in plan having a downturned rim formed integrally therewith and extending peripherally thereabout, bristles integrally connected with the under side of the back which are closely spaced throughout the area thereof within said downturned rim, said bristles tapering from the inner ends to the outer free ends thereof, oppositely disposed straps integrally connected with said back at the opposite ends thereof respectively along substantially straight parallel lines on opposite sides respectively of the longitudinal medial line through the back, interengageable means carried by said straps adjustably connecting said straps together to provide a loop extending over the top of said back in acute angular relation to the longitudinal medial line through the back and adapted for receiving a hand of the user between said loop and the back with the forefinger and the little finger in substantially parallel relation to said straight lines, and said interengageable means consisting of spaced slotted portions in one of said straps with a lug formed thereon between said slotted portions and with longitudinally spaced holes in the other strap for receiving said other strap through said slotted portions and with the lug selectively engaging in any one of said holes.
