Description
. UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE.
SIGMUND L. LEDERER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,772, dated March 25, 1884. Application filed October 19, 1883. (Model) To wZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, SIeMUND L. LEDERER,
V of the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented anew and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chain-Links; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in ornamental links, which, when secured together in the usual manner by com necting-links, form ornamental watch and other chains.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the links, by which the ornamental spiral center is constructed to allow the connecting-loops of the link to be drawn out against the resistance of the spiral wire, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a view of a chain-link consisting of two pairs of interlocked loops with a spiral spring-wire placed in the center so as to bear against one end of each pair of loops. Fig. 2 is a viewshowing the same chain-link extended. Fig. 3 is a view of alink having two spiral wires placed in the center, each bearing against one end of the box forming the link proper and against the square ends oftwo horseshoe-shaped loops. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a view of a link,
being a modification of the link shown in Figs. 3 and 4; and Fig. 6 is a side View of the same link shown extended.
In the drawings, a a are two wire links secured together at their ends, and a a are two wire links, also secured together and placed within the first pair.
I) is a coiled wire, which, while it forms an ornamental center, acts against one end of each pair of links, so that they are held in the position shown in Fig. 1, but may be drawn out or extended, as is shown in Fig.2.
0 c are the connecting-links.
The modification consists in placing within a box-linkthe square ends of two U-shaped or or horseshoe-shaped links and inserting two spiral wires to act against each end separately.
02 d are boxes, which may be made in any suitable form, of square, oval, oblong, or other section. provided with slots, into which the square ends of the links 6 6 enter, and by which they are guided. The spiral springs are inserted into the box d and bear against the ends of the box, and also against the square ends of the U- shaped links e e.
The spiral wires are ornamental, and improve the appearance of the chain-link. They also allow the chain made of such links to extend or lengthen under strain, so that any sudden strain on a watch-chain will not break the same, as it will yield to the strain, the strain beingtaken up by the coiled-wire springs b b.
Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the wire links a a and the links a a, of the coiled-wire spring b, constructed to allow the link to be extended, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SIGMUND L. LEDERER.
