WILLIAM II. CLOUD, :OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part ofl Letters Patent No. 295,354, dated March 18, 1884.
Application tiled January 23,1884. (No model.)
2b aZZ whom, t may concern;
Be it known thatI I, WILLIAM H. CLOUD, of
Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan,
have invented a new and vuseful Improvement in Vises; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had totheaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention consists of the combinations of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly-pointed outin the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. is a separate view of one of the parts. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, showing parts in elevation.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved bench-vise adapted for general uses.
More particularly, it consists in an improved vise in which the jaws may be quickly adjusted to and fro to engage with the work, without the necessity of accomplishing this adjustment solely by ascrew in the more ordinary way, and in the operation of which the jaws will be perfectly perpendicular to each other in their bearing upon the work. r j
I accomplish my purpose as follows:
As illustrated in the drawings, A and A are the jaws.
B is a bar provided with a toothed or ratcheted edge, b, said bar provided with an arm, B, at right angles to the toothed section, and with a screw-cut extremity, B2. The toothed section of this bar passes freely through the jaw A, said jaw being constructed with a corresponding oriiice-for this purpose. The jaw A is divided at its base to admit the arm B, which at its lower extremity is pivoted in its place, as shown at o. lSaid jaw is also provided with an orifice corresponding to the screw-cut extremity B2 of the bar, and allowing alimited play of the jaw thereon by means of its pivotal connection with. the extremity of the arm B. To control the amount of this play, I preferto construct the bar with a groove of suitable depth and width, a, and to provide the jaw with a stop, a?, operatingin said groove.
C is anysuitable cap-screw tapped and adapted to work upon the screw-cut end of the bar.
C is the operating-handle.
D is any suitable spring adapted to throw the upper end of the jaw back when the pressure ofthe cap thereon is released. I prefer to construct the jaw A with suitable spurs, a3, to limit the friction of the end of the cap upon the jaw.
E is a latch suitably pivoted at one end, adapted to engage with the teeth of the bar B. E is any suitable spring adapted to throw said latch into engagement with said teeth.
e is a guide-pin.
The jaw A may be secured upon the bench F in any suitable manner.
The operation of the device is as follows: By depressing the latch it is disengaged from the teeth of the bar B, when the jaw A', with the bar B pivotally connected therewith, may be readily adjusted to and fro in the jaw A, as may be desired, when, by means of the operating-handle, the cap C may be forced forward upon the upper end of the jaw, forcing it forward intoa perpendicular and firmly upon the work, the latch being forced upward by the spring to engage with the toothed bar. In releasing the jaw A from the work, it would be better, obviously, to retract the cap, allowing the jaw to play backward upon its pivoted connection with the arm B', which will result from the action of the spring D, the upper end of said jaw being limited in its play by a stop,
c2, as before described. By depressing the latch the jaw may be retracted still farther, if desired.
In the construction of the toothed bar, I prefer to manufacture the same-with shoulders b and b2, so that the latch will have contact therewith at each side of the toothed portion, affording greater firmness.
W hat I claim is- 1. In a bench-vise, the toothed bar B, provided with an angular arm, B', and screw-cut extremity B2, substantially as described.
2. In a bench-vise, the combination, with one of the jaws, of an angular toothed bar pivoted thereto, said bar constructed with a screwcut extremity extending through said jaw, and mechanism operating upon said screwout ex- ICO tremity to operate the jaw, substantially as de scribed.
3. In a vise. the combination, with one of the jaws, of an angular toothed barpivoted thereto.; and having a screw-cut end passing freely through said jaw, and means for reciprocating the upper end. of said jaw upon said bar, substantially as described.
4. In a vise7 the combination, with one of the jaws7 of an angular toothed bar pivoted thereto7 said bar constructed with ascrew` tapped extremity passing freely through said said jaw, and means operating upon the screwg cut extremity of the bar to force said jaw into engagement with the Work7 substantially as described.
' 5. In a vise, an angular-toothed bar pivoted in one of the jaws. and provided with a screwcut extremity passing` freely through said j aw, and means for reciprocating saidjaw upon said bar and for limiting the reciprocation of the i same, substantially as described.
6. The combination, in a vise, with the two jaws7 ofthe angular toothed bar, said bar piv- 7. The combination, in a vise, with a slotted jaw adapted to be secured to a bench, of an angular toothed bar passed freely through said xjaw and pivotally connected with the other ,l jaw, said bar constructed with a screw-cut end passed freely through the latter jaw, the con- 'l the jaw may be reciprocated upon the'bar, j mechanism for giving said jaw a limited rei ciprooation, and a latch adapted to be thrown l into and out ot' action with said bar, substanz tially as described.
In testimony t-hereofI sign this specification i in the presence of two witnesses.
