,lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
UNITED STATES PATENT @EEI E.
BIRCH ELLIS, OF MORAVIA, NEW YORK.
BUTTER-PAC KAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES P. SINCLAIR, of Mottville, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Package, of which the fol- This invention seeks to provide an air-tight package for holding small quantities of butter, which package may be used over and over again.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, ibrming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a broken front elevation of my new andimproved butter-package as it appears when the two parts of the package are locked together. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one of the jars; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the wooden locking- A. A represent the jars. These are by preference made of glass, and are formed with the flanges a a. These flanges a a are made a little below the open ends of the jars, so as to form the lips I) b, for retaining in place the rubber or other packing, B, placed between the flanges (up when the jars'AA are put together; and the flanges a a are beveled or formed with the enlarged portions 0 c on opposite sides of the jars, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, which enable the jars to be drawn snugly together upon the packing B by the locking-buttons G- C; placed upon the flanges a a, and the flanges a a are beveled or undercut, as shown at e e, to furnish a secure hold for the notches f f of the buttons 0 O. The buttonsOG are turned into the shape shown, and the notches f f thereof are slightly undercut to correspond with the undercut shape of the flanges a a, and at g the buttons are made concaved to correspond with the shape of the outer edges of the flanges a a, which are slightly rounded. as shown at a a, Fig. 1, thus making the buttons to fit nicely part of Letters Patent No. 295,295, dated March 18, 1884. Application filed September 11, 1883. Modem upon the flanges, and thus preventing all danger of the buttons, when applied and being forced upon the thickened portions 0 c of the flanges c a, turning sidewise, which would tend to break the flanges and to make an insecure and unreliable lock. Constructed as shown, the buttons will not slip off from the flanges and loosen the joint between the jars, nor will they break the flanges.
In use both jars. A A, will be filled with butter and then placed face to face one upon the other, with the packing B placed between their edges. The buttons G G will then be placed upon the flanges a a and forced upon the thickened portions 0 0 thereof, which will draw the edges of the jarsAA together firmly upon the packing B, which will perfectly eX- clude the air from the butter, thus enabling the butter to be kept in the package fresh and sweet for a great length of time.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to form a butter-package in two sections held together on intermediate packing, or to use outer cam-flanges in conjunction with the clamps which hold the sections tightly pressed on the packing; but
What ldo claim as new and of my invention 1. The combination, with jars A A, having the cam-flanges undercut at top and bottom, of the two buttons 0 G, provided with correspondingly shaped notches f, whereby the clamps are held in place, as described.
2. The jars A A, formed with the flanges a a, made rounding at their outer edges, as at a a, undercut, as at e e, and enlarged, as at c c, in combination with the buttons 0 0, formed with the undercut notches f f, and made rounding, as at g, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
