3 Claims. (Cl. 222-192) This invention relates to a closure device for a beverage container such as a bottle or the like and more particularly to a novel pouring spout.
An important object of the present invention resides in the provision of a pouring spout adapted to facilitate the dispensing of liqueur and other beverages from a container such as a bottle and which may be easily secured on the bottle by threadedly engaging the neck of the bottle.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a pouring spout which is easily constructed from four separate pieces which are lockingly held together relative to each other in a novel Way so as to prevent rotation of one section with respect to the other sections, or relative movement therebetween, and which may be manufactured out of various synthetic plastic materials such as polystyrene or the like, with the parts being capable of being bonded together during assembly.
A still further object of the present invention resides in the provision of means for enabling advertising indicia to be used in conjunction with a pouring spout, with the advertising indicia also serving as a handle for the pouring spout or as an indicator of the contents of the bottle. a
An additional object of the invention resides in the provision of means for facilitating the assembly of the parts of a pouring spout, so that they will be automatically aligned and held together for future bonding as may be desired and wherein the parts are so interlocked as to provide a seal against leakage of the contents of the bottle.
Still further objects and features of the present in vention reside in the provision of a pouring spout that is simple in construction, easy to assemble, highly attractive in appearance, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
These, together with the various ancillary objects and features of the invention, which will become apparent as the following description proceeds, are attained by this pouring spout, preferred embodiments of which have been illustrated in the accompanying drawings by way of example only, wherein:
Fig. l is an elevational view of the pouring spout comprising the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the pouring spout;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the pouring spout showing in detail the means whereby the various parts are locked together; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial sectional detail view as taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 3, illustrating the means for locking the label sheet in place.
With continuing reference to the accompanying drawing wherein like reference numerals designate similar parts throughout the various views, reference numeral generally designates the pouring spout comprising the present invention which is formed of two complementary spout sections 12 and 14. Each of these spout sections is of a substantially semi-circular cross-section and is provided with a tapered upper portion as at 16. The lower portion of each spout section is provided with an integrally formed key as at 18 and 20, together with an integrally formed rib 22 and 24. Further, each of the spout sections is provided with apertures 26 and 28 therein communicating with the space 30 between the lower portion 32'of the spout and the complementary ribs 22 and 24 to form a substantially L-shaped vent passage. Between the ribs 22 and 24 and the rest of the spout there is formed a pouring passage 34.
In addition, integrally formed with each of the spout sections is a holder frame 36 and 38, respectively, which holder frames are preferably of elliptical shape but may be formed circular, or of other suitable shape as may be desired, it being noted that an arcuate shape is much preferred to reduce the chance of accidental injury to the user when employing the invention through striking of the flesh of the hand or arms of the user.
Each of the holder frames 38 is provided with peripheral grooves as at 40, which cooperate to form means for receiving a sheet 42 which may have advertising or label indicia thereon, the sheet being thus mounted within the holder frames. The holder frames are further provided with complementary depressions 44 which are adapted to receive a locking tab integrally formed with the sheet 42 to thus hold the sheet 42 against rotation from the desired position.
It is to be recognized that the sheet may be formed of cardboard, paperboard, thin plastic material, or the like, which may have the indicia printed thereon or otherwise supplied thereon prior to assembly.
The twospout sections 12 and 14 are received within a cap 46 having an outer cylindrical wall 48 and an inner cylindrical wall 50. The inner cylindrical wall 50 is integrally formed with the outer cylindrical wall 48 and is connected thereto by a top 52. The top 52 is provided with a raised peripheral flange 54 and a cen tral recess 56, the central recess receiving the collar sections 58 and 66, which are integrally formed with the spout sections 12 and 14. The inner cylindrical wall 52 is provided with a keyway 64 for receiving the keys 18 and 20 therein for lockingly holding the sections 12 and 14 together and against rotation.
Further, the keys in the keyway together with the collar arrangement provide means to prevent longitudinal and rotational shifting of the parts of the invention.
The pouring spout sections 12 and 14 may be bonded to the cap 46 in any convenient manner and it is noted that the outer surface of the portions of the cap 46 may be narrowed or otherwise roughened or provided with alternate ridges and grooves as at 70 for enabling the cap to be more easily grasped and rotated.
The inner surface of the outer Wall 48 is threaded as at 72 for facilitating threaded engagement with the neck of the bottle. In use the cap of the bottle is removed therefrom and disposed of, then the pouring spout 10 comprising the present invention is readily secured on the bottle, after which the desired amount of beverage may be delivered through the pouring passageway with the vent passageway including the apertures 26 and 28 and the space 30 serving to vent the interior of the bottle.
It is noted that the apertures 26 and 28 are arranged below the holder frames 36 and 38 and do not extend in a straight line so as to provide a baffle against accidental pouring of fluid therethrough.
Thus, it can be seen that there has been provided a pouring spout 10 comprising a pair of complementary spout sections 12 and 14 of substantially semi-circular cross-sectional configuration, each of the sections 12 and 14 having a key 18, 20, and a rib 22, 24 integrally formed therewith. A cap 46 is provided with an inner cylindrical wall 50 and an outer cylindrical wall 48 spaced from the inner cylindrical Wall 50 and integrally connected thereto by a top wall 52, said inner cylindrical wall having a key-Way 64 therein, the sections 12 and 14 being received within the inner cylindrical Wall 50 withthe keys 18 and 20 being locked in the keyway 64, the sections, having complementary apertures '26 an'd 28 therein with the ribs being in abutting engagement to form a pouring passage 34 and cooperating with the apertures 26 and 28 to form a substantially L-shaped vent passage.
Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and it is intended that such obvious changes and modifications be embraced by the annexed claims. Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. A pouring spout comprising a pair of complementary spout sections of substantially semi-circularcross sectional configuration, each of said sections having a key and a rib integrally formed therewith, a cap pro- ;videdwith an inner cylindrical Wall and an outer cylindrical'wallspaced from said inner cylindrical wall and integrally connected thereto by a top Wall, said inner wall having a keyway therein, said sections being received within said inner cylindrical wall with said keys being locked in said keyway, said sections having complementary apertures therein, said ribs being in abutting engagement to form a pouring passage and cooperating with said apertures to form a substantially L-shaped vent passage, said sections having complementary peripheral holder'frames integrally formed therewith above said apertures, said holder frames having complementary peripheral grooves therein, and a sheet seated in said grooves between said frames, each of said frames having complementary depressions therein communicating with said grooves, said sheet having a locking tab engaged in said depressions to hold said sheet in position against rotation.
2. A pouring spout comprising a pair of complementary spout sections of substantially semi-circular cross sectional configuration, each of said sections having a key and a rib integrally formed therewith, a cap provided with an inner cylindrical wall and an outer cylindrical wall spaced from said inner cylindrical wall and integrally connected thereto by a top wall, said inner wall having a keyway therein, said sections being received within said inner cylindrical wall with said keys being locked in said keyway, said sections having complementary apertures therein, said ribs being in abutting engagement to form a pouring passage and cooperating with said apertures to form a substantially L-shaped vent passage, said top wall having a recess therein, said sections having complementary collar portions, said collar portions lockingly seating in said recess, said sections having complementary peripheral holder frames integrally formed therewith above said apertures, said holder frames having complementary peripheral grooves therein, and a sheet seated in said grooves between said frames. 7 p r 3.
