(Noi'ModeLy w. P. MARSHALL. SHUTTER BOW'ER AND PASTB NER. V No'. Z'94,894 Patented Mam-Q 11, 1884.

Nrra STATES PATENT tr es.
I \VILLIAM P. MARSHALL,- OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHUTTER BOW-ER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,894, dated March I1, 1884.
Application filed December 5, 1862.
of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The object of this invention is to produce a shutter bower or fastener whereby the shutters, when open, can be held at any desired angle, and when shut be firmly secured together; and to this end the invention consists in a pair of plates, in combination withaconnecting-bar, each of said plates consisting of a fiat body, with a series of sockets or holes therein, and a vertical rim extending from end to end thereof, and perforated to receive nails or screws, whereby the plate may be fastened tothe shutter, the said connectingbar having its ends bent at right angles to its body, to form downwardly-depending hooks adapted to enter the sockets or holes in the plates.
The invention also consists in providing each plate with one or more lips extending upwardly from the body of the plate, whereby when the shutters are closed lateral displace ment of the bar is prevented.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved shutter bower or fastener, showing its application to a pair of shutters when the shutters are closed; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the shutters at an angle or partly open.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A A designate shutters, to which are fastened the plates B B by nails or screws driven through the vertical rims G C.
D designates the connecting-bar, havingits ends bent at right angles to its body, to form downwardly-depending hooks dd, adapted to enter sockets or holes I), bf, b and b in the plates BB.
E E designate lips extending upwardly from the body of each plate B. I
\Vhen the shutters are closed, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the bar D rests on the (No model.)
plates 13 13, between the rims C G and lips E E, the hooks d d entering the sockets or holes I) b, and thus the shutters are firmly locked in place, the lips E E preventing any lateral displacement of the bar D. \Vhen it is desired to open the shutters, the bar D must be lifted up until the hooks d d are out of the sockets or holes I) b. The shutters can then be bowed out to any desired position, and firmly held in such position by inserting the hooks (Z (Z in the sockets or holes I) Z), for instance, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or in the sockets or holes b b and Z) Z)", as may be desired.
As shown, the vertical rim 0 of each plate extends from end to end of the plate; but it is obvious that this rim may be dispensed with, and lips like the lips E E, for instance, substituted in its place.
The plates B, rims O, and lips E may be made of any suitable metal formed in one piece by stamping or casting, and the bar D can be wrought or cast, as may be desired.
By this invention I produce a shutter bower or fastener whereby the shutters can be securely'locked when closed, and firmly held at any desired angle when open, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and can be easily applied and used by any one.
I am aware that it is old to make a shutterfast-ening consisting of a hooked bar or bolt having a swiveled joint and a catch to receive said bar when not in use, in combination with a flanged plate having openings or sockets therein to receive the hook of the bolt, upright flanges, and intervening spaces to hold the bar in position to secure the shutters open or closed; and I do not claim such construc tion, my invention comprising a socket-plate for each of the shutters identical in construction, and a loose bar hooked at both ends to engage such socket-plates, thus dispensing with swivel-joints and special constructions of prominent dissimilarity for each shutter; hence What I claim as my invention, and desire to seizure by Letters Patent, is
