INVENTOR.
a ATTORNEY United States Patent O WATCH AND PILL CASE OR THE LIKE Abraham Blumstein, 98-03 69th Ave., Forest Hills, N .Y.
Filed Sept. 9, 1957, Ser. No. 682,957
3 Claims. (Cl. 58-575) This invention relates to alarm type wrist watches and, more particularly, to a watch of this type incorporating a pill holder forming a sound augmenter for the alarm or sounder of the watch.
Alarm type wrist watches are well known and generally incorporate an alarm including a hammer or clapper for striking the wrist engaging or backface of the watch. They thus not only produce an audible sound but also alert the wearer by the virtue of the light blows transmitted to the wrist.
Wrist watches of this type are particularly useful to people who are required to take medication at regular intervals. After each medication, the watch may be reset so as to alert the wearer when the next medication is due.
In accordance with the present invention, such use of an alarm type wrist watch is greatly facilitated by providing a pill container or the like operatively associated with the back face or sound diaphragm of the watch in such a manner that a wall of the container bears against the sound diaphragm of the watch and acts as a sound augmenter for the latter, the sound being further augmented by the resonator formed by the pill container. The pill container is provided with a hinged cover normally lying against the wrist and facilitating access to the contents of the container.
For an understanding of the invention principles, reference is made to the following description of a typical embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of an alarm wrist watch and pill container embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation view thereof;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the assembly with the pill container open;
Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the watch and container;
Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view of the watch per se, illustrating the sounder diaphragm; and
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the pill container.
Referring to the drawings, the watch and container assembly embodying the invention comprises an alarm wristwatch 10 to which is disengageably and cooperatively secured a pill container 20.
Watch 10 comprises a front face 11, cylindrical side wall 12 and a back face including a retaining ring 13 surrounding a projecting sound diaphragm 15. Wall 12 extends somewhat beyond ring 13 for a purpose to be described.
A flexible diaphragm 25 of plastic or metal is snapped in place beneath radial flange 22. The inner diameter of this radial flange is greater than the diameter of sounding diaphragm 15 so that, when container 20 is engaged in wall 12 of watch 10, sounding diaphragm 15 bears against the larger diameter flexible diaphragm 25. Diaphragm 25 thus augments the sound when diaphragm 15 is struck by clapper 17, and the sound is further augmented by the resonance of the hollow container 20.
The pills 24 are retained in container 20 by a cover 26 hinged to Wall 21 and having a latch 27 engageable with a catch 28 on this wall. Cover 26 has a circular recess 29 in its inner surface forming a pill cavity.
The disengageable relationship of watch 10 and container 20 facilitates refilling of the container, although the container may be re-filled without disengagement from watch 10.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the invention principles, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, an alarm watch having a sounding diaphragm projecting from a substantially flat retaining ring and forming therewith the back face of the watch, a sounder cooperable with said diaphragm and a side rim projecting outwardly beyond said retaining ring; a container having a side wall engageable within said watch side rim; a flange extending inwardly substantially perpendicular to said container side wall; a flexible diaphragm seated on said flange and having substantial surface engagement with said sounding diaphragm over the entire surface of the latter when said container wall is engaged in said watch rim; and a cover hinged to said container wall and cooperating with the latter and with said flexible diaphragm to form the container; said flexible diaphragm augmenting the sound when said sounder strikes said sounding diaphragm and said container acting as a sound resonator.
2. In combination, an alarm watch having a sounding diaphragm projecting from a substantially flat retaining ring and forming therewith the back face of the watch, a sounder cooperable with said diaphragm and a side rim projecting outwardly beyond said retaining ring; a container having a side wall'engageable within said watch side rim; a flange extending inwardly substantially perpendicular to said container side wall; a flexible diaphragm seated on said flange and having substantial surface engagement with said sounding diaphragm over the entire surface of the latter when said container wall is engaged in said watch rim; and a cover hinged to said container wall and cooperating with the latter and with said flexible diaphragm to form the container; said flexible diaphragm being larger than sounding diaphragm and augmenting the sound when said sounder strikes said sounding diaphragm and said container acting as a sound resonator.
3. The combination claimed in claim 1 in which said container wall includes a portion outwardly of said flexible diaphragm offset, inwardly fr,om.the container wall by an amount s uch'that, when said container is engaged in said watch, the watch rim and the container wall outwardly of, said diaphragm are substantiallyiflush.
