SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,808, dated March 11, 1884.
Application .filed October 12, 1883.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
, Be it known that I, FREDERECH BEINDEL,
of York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladder Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable o thers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in step-ladder chairs, thc object being to provide a chair having an upholstered seat and back, and constructed to occupy a small space, and that may-be readily transformed into a stepladder; and with these ends in View my invention consists in certain-features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be here-` inafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of the chair with the step-ladder folded beneath the seat. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, showing the step-ladder unfolded or partly extended. Fig. 3 is a similar vie w, showin g the'step-ladder extended its entire length. Fig. 4 is a front view of the step-ladder when unfolded and extended, and Fig. 5 is a front view of the chair having the step-ladder folded beneath its seat.
Thechairseat is composed of the two sections A and B, hinged together by the hinges A', secured to the side edges of the seat, thus insuring a smooth unobstructed surface to the upper side of the hinged seat. Section A of the chairseat has rigidly secured thereto the lleg B and the inclined brace E, the leg and brace being secured together, near their lower ends, by the brace e. The under side of the seat-section B has rigidly secured thereto the ends of the side sections J of the'step-ladder, the upper ends of the side sections J having hinged thereto the side sections I of the upper hinged sectionof the step-ladder. The leaves Z of the hinge L, employed in hinging together the sections I J, are located at an angle to the sides, as shown in the drawings, to insure a rm fastening Vfor the hinge. hen these sections are folded together as represented in Fig. l, they are fastened together by means of a hook, K, pivoted to section J, and adapted to engage a pin or stu-d, k, on section (No model.)
I. Section B of the seat has rigidly secured inthe position as shown in Fig. 1 the rear portion of the seat is supported by said rollers M, thereby enabling the chair to be easily movedfrom place to place.
C represents the seat-cushion, and is hinged to the rear edge of the rear section, B, of the seat-bottom. To transform the chair shown in Fig. l into a step-ladder, the parts are first adj usted to the position shown in Fig. 2, which is accomplished by unlocking the hook K and folding the section B forwardly over and upon the section A of the seat, in which position the back F will constitute a rear brace for the step-ladder. The seat-cushion C will be suspended from the seat-section B as shown in Fig. 2. Section I of the step-ladder is then raised to the position shown -in Fig. 3, where it is secured by means of the hook P,which is pivoted at one end to one ofthe steps O, and engages a stud or pin secured to another step, O. Side pieces or braces, E,are providedwith a step, O, which forms the lower step of the ladder, while the second step is formed by the seat-section B. The sections ofthe step -ladder are provided with any desired number of steps. O. From the foregoing it will be observed that the chair constructed as described may be readily transformed into a step-ladder consisting of the three sections E, J, and I, firmly secured together and braced, so as to be retained in an upright position by means of the legs B and chair-arms F. Vhen used as a step -ladder, the cushion is retained suspended as shown, and thus prevented from being un- IOO with the hinged sent A B, of the legs B and with the sections A B,hinged together, and the brace E, seeured to the section A, the section hinged cushion C, of supports rigidly Secured J, rigidly secured to the section B, the seetion to the section A, and supports rigidly Secured I 5 l, pivotally secured to the section .Land hooks to the section B, all of the above parts being 5 for securing the parts in open :1nd elosed adl Combined as described.
