SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 294,656, dated March 4, 1884;

Application filed June 18, 1883.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RANDOLPH MITCH LL, a citizen of the United States. residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gentlemens Garters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. I

My invention relates to garment-supports, its main object being to support socks or stockings and sleeves, although it can be used for such other portions of garment as it can be applied to. v

In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, both'figures represent my invention in perspective, Figure 1 showing the article applied to a leg,

In the figures, A represents a strip of elastic cloth of suitable width, and of length sufficient to adapt ity for use on ahuman arm or leg. To one end of this strip or band is secured a buckle, B, for the purpose of shortening or lengthening it, the tines oi" the buckle catching in the main portion of the strip. Caught in the-loop formed when. the buckle is in position is a ring, D. Secured to the other end of the band A is a hook, 0, made of suitable strap-metal. WVhen the band A is made to surround the arm orleg, thehook O is caught in the ring D, .for holding the band in position.

] gripping device, such as is in common use, consisting simply of two jaws pivoted together and provided with a spring, so arranged as to keep the outer ends of the jaws pressed toward each other, the jaws-being provided with teeth to enable them to more securely hold the fabric placed between them.

The application of this articleis readily seen by reference to Fi 1. The band A surrounds the leg above the-calf, and the hook O is caught in the ring D. It will now act as an ordinary garter. To support the stocking below, the elastic strap is stretched downward and the fabric is caught in the gripping-jaws of the device F, and is thus constantly drawn upward.

Lam aware that the general principle of this invention is not new; hence I do not claim it, broadly 5 but \Vhat I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The elastic band A, one end of which is provided with a buckle and looped into ring D,

the other end being provided with a hook adapted to catchinto said ring, in combination with the short elastic strap E, one end of which is secured to ring D and the other having a clamping device attached to it, substantially as shown and described.
