GLASS-TOP COUNTER FOR STORES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,512, dated March 4, 1884. Application filed September 26, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SCHUTZ, of the city, county, and Statev of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sales-Counters f for Stores and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. y
My invention relates to au improvement in that class of counters for stores in which the top is fitted with glass. The counters and show-cases of this description, as heretofore constructed, have failed in meeting the demand for an illuminated counter and the wants of thel public in this respect, in view of the fact that the upper portion of the counter has been constructed either asa detachable showcase, fitted with drawers, and therefore unsuited to the display therein, or to the handthcrefrom of a general. stock of goods, and to the furnishing o r fitting up of afirstor has beencomposed of a series of panes of-glass, impairing the continuity of surface desirable in the top of the counter, and which, being superimposed upon tiers of two or more drawers, is ill adapted for the purpose of displaying or storing the goods. I may state, therefore, by way of premise, that my invention does not relate to or embrace the combinationof a detachable transparent top or show case with a stationary counter', either with or without drawers, nor to a counter whose top surface is composed of a series ofpanes of glass superabove the tiers of drawers, nor to a transparent show-case, as such; but my said' invention consists in the combination, with a secure frame adapted to constitute, in neat form, the top edges of a fixed counter, and with a receptacle under the same, consisting of a shelf inclosed by the solid front and ends of the counter, and by hinged panels as the rear, of a single continuous sheet of glass supported by and uponsaid frame, and int-ermediately, as required, by slender upright supports springing from the shelf, whereby a continuous, clean, hard, smooth top surface is provided the whole length of the counter, adapted for measuring out and exhibiting goods without the possibility of injury thereto, and through which the goods stored and protected in the receptacle beneath said top plate may be fully displayed for inspection without removal, except as occasion requires, and be removedl and replaced without interference with the full use of the counter in the A represents the counter, constructed solidly and neatly in any approved form and style of finish, with its upper portion projecting somewhat at the front in the customary manner.
B is an upper shelf dividing this upper part of the counter from that below it, and which, in connection with thel solid ends and sides, forms a neat receptacle, O, Fig. 4, for the receptionand display ofV goods, extending the full length and which is closed at'the rear bya series of hinged drop-panels, C G.
D is a continuous unbroken frame extending aroundthe entire top edge ofthe counter at front, ends, and rear, making a neat nishl thereto, and which is recessed on its inner side to receive and properly support the edges width of the counter, and
of a continuous sheet of plate-glass, E, tted" to rest closely within the recess, and to be firmly and solidly upheld thereby, a narrow packingstrip of rubber being preferably inserted'under the glass, to make a better joint and seat for the same.`
F F are neat slender columns, preferably of glass, resting upon the shelf B, and serving as intermediate supports for the continuous eX- tended plate of glass E. The edges of 'the glass plate may be beveled and left to project slightly above the inclosing-frame D, or be inserted flush therewith, so that the top of the counter shall be perfectly smooth and unbroken. j
The goods-receptacle Cmay be neatlyfnished in any desirable style, and its sides lined with mirrors, to promote an effective display ofthe goods placed therein.
IOO
I claim as my invention- An improved stationary sides-Counter, Constructed with a continuons transparent' top of plate-glass, supported upon an extended 5 xed frame, constituting the edges of the counter, and covering a receptacle in the, top of the counter, closed at front and ends by its solid easing and in the rear by suitable droppanels, all substantially in Jshe manner and 1o for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL SCHUTZ.
