' ADJUSTABLE NozzLEs Filed Aug. 26, 195e' TTORNEY' This invention relates to vspray nozzles such as kare used on lawn sprinklers or as a garden hose nozzle.
It is desirable at times to'havea spray nozzle which will produce a subtantially flat fan-type of spray or atV other times, a solid jet stream without appreciably changing the volume of the projected stream. Such a nozzle is particularly useful in association with the so-called knock-about or impulse type sprinklers of the general characterV shown in my prior application, Serial Number 585,119, issued as patent 2,853,342. Impulse sprinklers are generally used for sprinkling lawns orA relatively small` United States Patent O er' Y Y 2 f Y rthe sprinkler and then locked in placeniby the lock nut 23.V Ahead of the threaded section 24 is anotherthreaded section 26 to which is threadedly engaged the sleeve 21 for the purpose of adjusting the said sleeve llongitudinally of the stem 20. The bushing 221 is tted into a eounterbore 27 in the sleeve 21 and held in place by va washer 28 secured to the outer end of such sleeve asi by a spun-over flange 29. It should be understood that the bushing 22 is rotatable in the counterbore 27 so that sleeve 21'fmay rotate relativerthereto for reasons as will appear later. v
' In order to produce either a fan-type 'of spray or a jet stream form the nozzle 10, the outer end of the stern is formed with an inward'tiangeY 30 surrounding a central orifice 31 andV a pair of diametrically opposed p slots 32 in the stem wall that extend through the flange 30 and intercept said central orice 31. The bushing 22 is provided with longitudinal ribs 33 adapted to slidably engage inthe slots 32, and said ribs are formed at their outerends with inward lugs 34 serving to close up that portion of the slots 32 that' extend through Ythe end of the flangev 30. Also, it will be noted from Fig.

Y'It' is the object of. this invention to provide, a very simple, etlicient and economical form 'of `nozzle for producing a fan-type or other form of wide spray for` smaller areas and aV jet type of stream for larger areas without affecting or valving off the amount of discharged iluid.

Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved nozzle Awhich in Fig l` is shown as attached to the body 11of ank impulse sprinkler having the usual swinging arm 12 on its upper end and a deflector vane 13 pivoted atftheouter'end nozzle 10, to cause thearm toV swing to one side orthe other ofthe nozzle axis against the iniluence of a `spring 14 which serves to return the arm to Vnormal position where a shoulder 15 on, said arm'will ,strikev an abutment stop 16 on theY body 11 and lcause Vthe v latter to intermittently rotate aboutits axis,
The nozzle 10 embodying my invention consists of a hollow stem 20, an adjustable sleeve21, a bushing 22 rotatably carried by said sleeve and a lock 'nut 23. Specically, the stein .has a threadedsecuon 24 at one end which is adapted to be threaded into a biased boss 1 1a onv the body 11 forja'ttaching the nozzlel to groove 36 therebetween Vwithin which is loosely fitted Y' that the terminal end of the lugs 34'are"arcuately shaped so as to conform to the size and shape of the central orifice 31 so that when'the sleeve 21 is advanced to its kforemost position as shown in Fig..3, it completesjV the circumference ofthe orifice 31;
To provide. a leak-proofsealing between A.the Ysleeve i 21'and the stem 20, thestem hasintermediate its length circumferentially spaced ribs 35 `providing anjannular a ilip'ring 37 having sealing engagement with the center bore of said sleeve.
`In the operation of the nozzle to provide a fan-type of spray, it is only necessary to rotate the sleeve 21 Aso as to move the bushing 22 inwardly from the discharge end of the stem 20, i.e., to the position shown in Fig. 2. V4In approaching this position, it will be noted Vthat the lugs 34 move axially inwardly and clear the forward end Vof the opposed slots 32 so that fluid can pass through the orice 31 as well as through the open l end of said slots.
When my nozzle is used with, a sprinkler of the type shown in Fig. l for the purpose of producing ar fan spray, it is preferable to have the opposed slots 32 in the stem 20 arranged-in a yvertical position. If used on other types of sprinklers, or as a hose nozzle, the position of the slots 32 can be arranged in any position to suit the needs of the area to be sprinkled, and the adjustment of the nozzle being held in Vlocked position by the lock nut 23.
If it is desired to produce along jet stream from the l vnozzle to irrigate larger areas, it is only necessary to i Y of said arm. What isdaimed:
1. A nozzle comprising a hollow nozzle stem having means at one end f or attachment to a ud supply, the opposite end of said stemY having a restricted orifice opening through said end in axial alignment with 'the stem and one or more slots intercepting said orice and extending lengthwise through the wall of said stem, a sleeve adjustable longitudinally on said stem, a bushing carried within said sleeve, and means` on said bushing serving to close said one or more slots when the sleeve is moved to an outer position to produce a jet stream` of fluid and to progressively open said one or more slots as the sleeve is moved to an inner position to produce a widened spray of fluid.
2. A nozzle comprising a hollow nozzle stern having means at one end for attachment to a fluid supply, the opposite end of said stem having a restricted round orifice opening through said end in axial alignment with the stem and one or more slots intercepting said oriiice and extending lengthwise through the Wall of said stem, a sleeve adjustable longitudinally on said stem, a bushing interposed between the stem and sleeve and having ribs Vslidable in saidA slots, and lugs extending radially inwardlly from the ends of said ribs and dimensioned to close up the slots where they intercept the round orifice at the end of the nozzle when the sleeve is 30 jet stream.
3. A nozzle member comprising a hollow sternl having means at one end for attachment to4 a uid supply, the opposite end of said stem having a closed end with a central circular orifice and having one or more slots in its sidewall, said slots intercepting said central orifice, a sleeve adjustable longitudinally on said stem, a bushing carried by said sleeve, -lug means on said bushing slidable in said slots for maintaining said bushing in non-rotatable connections with said stern, said lug means cooperating with said slots and said end orice whereby. the combined areas, of sa'd slots and end `orice maybe varied by movement ot said sleeve onv said stem to gradually vary the character of theV discharge fluid from a diversiiied type of spray tol a solid jet and vice-versa.
4. A nozzle as deined in claim 3 whereinlthe slots of said stem are a pair of diametrically opposed slots serving to produce a fan-type of spray when the bushing is adjusted to its innermost position.
5. A nozzle member as defined in claim 3` wherein the terminal ends of the lugs are of arcuate shape to conform with the circular orice.
