CHAMBER-PAH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,776, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed August 27, 1883. (Model):
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HENRY PAU- LUs, of Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chamber- Pails and other Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a chamber-pail to which my improve ment has been applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same, taken through the line 50 a", Fig. 1, and looking upward. Fig. 3is a bottom view of the cover. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the ears and an end of the bail.
The object of this invention is to prevent the escape of unpleasant odors from chamber-pails and other vessels provided with covers, and also to prevent the top of the vessel from being accidentally bent in such a manner that the cover will not fit accurately.
A represents the body of the pail, to the bottom of which is attached a flange, B, to serve as a foot. To the upper edge of the body A is seamed the outer edge of an inwardly-projecting rim or flange, C. In the under side of the rim C, near its inner edge, is formed an annular recess,to receivearing, D, of iron or other suitable metal, and the inner edge of the said rim C is then turned or spun down over the inner edge of the ring D and into a rabbet in the inner part of the lower side of the said ring D, so as to leave the mouth of the vessel neat and smooth. With this construction, the annular top of the vessel is strengthened, so that it will not be liable to be bent by an accidental blow or by pressure when used as a seat upon which to stool, in such a manner as to prevent the cover from fitting accurately into the mouth of the said vessel.
E is the cover, which is made of such a size that its edge will overlap the inner edge of the annular top or rim C. Upon the lower side of the outer part of the coverE is placed an annular plate, F, of rubber or other suitable material, to serve as a packing between the cover E and rim C, and which is secured in place by the upper edge of the downwardly projecting flange G. Upon the flange G are formed, or to it are attached, lugs H, to receive the bolts I, which pass through the cover E, so as to hold the flange G and packing F securely in place. To the center of the cover E is secured, by eyebolts or staples J or other suitable means, the middle part of a spring-rod, K, which is made ofsuch a length that its end will extend a little beyond the ears L, to which the bail M is hinged. In the opposite side edges of the ears Lare formed recesses N,to receive the end parts of the rod K. One or both ends of the rod K can be provided with handles 0, for convenience in operating the said rod. With this construction the cover E will be held securely in place by the elasticity of the rod K, and the said elasticity allows the said rod to be readily sprung into and out of the recesses N, to fasten an d uniasten th 0 cover.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The elastic rod K, combined with a chamber-pail cover and ears having recesses N, whereby a bail may be used for carrying said chamber and the cover be readily fastened or unfastened, as described.
2. In a chamber-pail, the combination, with the cover E, of the separable flange G, having lugs H, the packing-ring F, and the bolts I, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a close joint will be formed between the said cover and its seat, as set forth.
CHARLES H. PAULUS.
