United States Patent BREAD BOARD OR SHELF BRACKET A 1) Carlisle and Elizabeth" A. Carlisle, Sacramento, Calif.
Application May 11, 1956, Serial No. 584,296
7 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-205) This invention relates to a bracket construction, and aims to provide a bracket so designed that it may be readily secured to one edge of a bread board, shelf or the like for removable attachment to a cabinet, providing an additional working area.
An important object of the invention is to provide a bracket of this character which may be readily and easily attached within a drawer opening, using the drawer partially extended from its opening as an additional support for the board or shelf, maintaining the board or shelf in a true horizontal position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bracket which may be adjusted for positioning over various sized beams of drawer openings providing an exceptionally secure support.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmental sectional view through a bracket and drawer mounted within a drawer opening of a cabinet.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bracket.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental perspective view of a modified form of bracket for positioning on cabinets where the drawer front panels extend downwardly from the top for a lesser height.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a cabinet is indicated generally by the reference character Sand embodies a forward vertically extending panel 6 which has the conventional drawer opening in which the drawer 7 is disposed.
The bracket constituting the subject matter of the present invention, is indicated generally by the reference character 8 and comprises a main plate 9 which has one of its longitudinal edges extended upwardly providing an upstanding flange 10 which has a plurality of spaced openings 11 through which suitable securing bolts, such as indicated at 12, are positioned for securing the bracket to one edge of a shelf, indicated by the reference character 13.
elongated openings accommodating the bolts 16 so that the clips 18 may be adjusted laterally with respect to the downwardly extended portion 14 of the main plate in gripping the forward vertically extending panel 6 or supporting beam, as better shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In the form of the bracket as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that the bracket provides an upstanding flange 21 that is secured to one edge of a shelf, in the same manner as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In thisfo'rm the main plate, which is indicated by the reference character 22, provides a support for the removable clips 23. These clips 23 are formed of a length of sheet metal material bent upon itself providing a U-: shaped clamp to be slid over one end of the stated main plate 22, as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawing.
This form of the bracket is used on a cabinet wherein the forward panel 6 is of lesser height and does not extend into the drawer 7. Each clip also includes an upstanding flange 24 that cooperates with the upstanding flange 21, of the bracket, the shorter downwardly depending forward panel 6 being received between the flanges 21 and 24.
In the use of the bracket to increase the Working area, the bracket is secured along one edge of the shelf, as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, and the bracket is then clamped within a drawer opening by securing the clamp along the lower edge of the vertically extending panel of the cabinet at the drawer opening. The drawer is of course moved to an extended position so that the forward portion of the drawer provides a support for the shelf 13 which is held in position by means ofthe stated clamp, forming the subject matter of the present invention.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing and detailed disclosure, a further description as to the construction and operation is unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed 1s:
A mounting bracket for supporting a shelf on the top edge of a drawer slidably mounted in the front wall of' a cabinet, when the drawer is in partially open position, comprised by a main supporting plate having a flange along'one edge positioned at right angles to the plane of the plate and of a height approximately equal to the thickness of the shelf to be attached thereto, a flange along the other edge also at right angles to the plane of the plate and extending in the opposite direction to that of the first flange, and an extension flange on said latter flange on the opposite side of the latter to the main supporting plate positioned at right angles to the plane of the latter and extending in parallel and spaced apart relationship to the plane of the main supporting plate, and
The main plate 9 is formed along its outer edge with a right angle downwardly extending flange 14, and the latter is in turn formed at its lower edge with a right angle flange 15 positioned parallel to the main plate 9 and on the opposite side of the flange 14 from the latter.
Openings are formed in the laterally extended horizontal flange 15, adjacent to the ends thereof, which openings accommodate the bolts 16, which bolts are extended into the elongated openings 17 of the clips 18.
These clips 18 have upstanding portions 19 that cooperate with the downwardly extended portion 14 of the bracket in clamping one edge of the forward vertically extending panel 6.
Elongated openings 17 are formed in the clips 18, these having holes therein along a line parallel to its longitudinal center line, L-shaped clips having elongated slots in one arm along the longitudinal center line of the latter, and bolts received in the holes in said extension flange and the elongated slots in the said arms of the L-shaped clips for positioning the other arms of the L-shaped clips in parallel relationship to the second flange and adjustable transversely of the extension flange.
