DETACHABLE PRESSING PLATES Thomas W. Snow, yMelrose, Mass., asslgnor to United Shoe Machinery Corporation, Flemington, NJ., a corporation of New Jersey s Application December 12, 1958, Serial No. 780,110
4 Claims. (Cl. 1212.`4)
-This application relates to a detachable pressing plate and is herein illustrated as embodied in a pressing plate which is adapted to be used with an auxiliary pressing member of the type disclosed in a copending application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 715,138, iled February 13, 1958, in the name of vthe .present inventor. lt will be understood, however, that vthe pressing plate of this invention is not limited to .use with a pressing member of this particular kind or to the exact mechanical construction illustrated.
The auxiliary pressing member desscribed in the abovementioned application comprises a metallic block having a flat surface to engage the overlasted upper materials at the toe end of a shoe and a generally V-shaped leading edge to provide an operating surface of a shape generally corresponding to that of the toe ends of shoes of a run of sizes and of generally the same style. While such a pressing member will accommodate shoes of a style having usual toe shapes, when shoes of a style having unusual toe shapes are to be lasted, a differently shaped auxiliary pressing member may be required. To A avoid the necessity for replacing the pressing member with one of such different shape, it is an object of this invention to provide a pressing plate which can be quickly attached to the auxiliary pressing member for changing the shape of its eifective operating surface. vWith this object in View, and in accordance with features of the invention, a sheet metal member, having a body portion of generally the same shape as that of the pressing member but with a V-shaped leading edge the opposite sides of which converge at an angle which diiers from that of the pressing member, is provided, together with means whereby it may be quickly and easily attached to and removed from the pressing member.
The above and other objects and features of thei invention will appear in the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the claims. A
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a toe lasting machine, with various parts omitted to simplify the disclosure, provided with an auxiliary pressing member and a quickly detachable pressing plate embodying the features of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of that portion of the toe lasting machine which is shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the quickly detachable pressing plate.
Referring to these drawings, in the toe lasting machine, a portion of which is therein illustrated, the wipers 10, 10 are associated with a wiper head, indicated generally by the reference character 12, and are adapted to be advanced and closed to the positions in which they are shown in Fig. 1, by mechanism, not shown, which may be power operated as disclosed in the mentioned application, or manually actuated in the well-known manner. Associated with the wiper head 2,933,743 Patented Apr. 26, 1960 and 2, by means including a stem portion 22 and operating mechanism similar to that provided for operating the pressing member of the machine disclosed in the Aabove-mentioned application. The pressing member 20 is preferably provided with an upstanding ridge or rib Z4 which is spaced only a short distance from the lower lsurfaces of the wipers and which serves as an additional support for the auxiliary pressing member when the wiper head is moved downwardly, by means of a foot treadle, not shown, to force the pressing member firmly against the overlasted margin'of the upper materials at the toe end of a shoe S being lasted.
A pressing member 20 in which the opposite sides 26 of the V-shaped leading edge are inclined at a rather wide angle, as shown in Fig. 1, is found to be suitable for use on shoes of various styles in which the shape of the toe is more or less conventional. However," in order to accommodate shoes of styles in which the shape of the toe is somewhat extreme, as illustrated, for example, in Fig. l, a dilerent shape of pressing member may be desirable.
To avoid the necessity for removing the pressing member 20 from the toe lasting machine and installing another ofthe desired shape, a detachable pressing plate 40 is provided. As shown, this detachable pressing plate has a body portion 42 shaped generally like that of the pressing member 20 but somewhat longer and provided with a leading edge having its opposite sides 44, 44 inclined to each other at a rather small angle. Adjacent to these opposite sides of its leading edge, the plate 40 is turned upwardly to provide a stiiiening web 46 as is the corresponding edge of a reinforcing plate 4S secured to the upper side of the pressing plate, Fig. 3. At its left-hand end, the plate 40 is provided with two integrally formed spring tabs 50, 50 which are inclined at a 4slight angle to the body of the plate, see Fig. 3, while adjacent to the opposite end of the plate are two integrally formed hook- like portions 52, 52 adapted to slip over the opposite sides of the pressing member 2G.
In applying the detachable pressing plate 40, the hook- like portions 52, 52 thereof are slipped over the right-hand end of the pressing member 20 with the spring tabs 50, 50 resting on its lower surface. Then the plate is slid along to the left until these tabs snap over the left-hand end of the pressing member, at which time the upturned web 46 will engage the trough of the V-shaped leading edge of the pressing member. This engagement of the upturned web 46 with the pressing member takes the thrust which is imposed on the detachable plate during use when the pressing member with its detachable pressing plate are moved toward the right, while the wiper head is urged downwardly to cause the plate to exert wiping pressure on the toe end of the shoe. The frictional grip of the spring tabs 50, 50 is suicient to hold the detachable plate on the pressing member when the pressing member is moved in the opposite direction, at which time the pressure of the plate on the upper materials will be relieved, at least to a considerable extent. However, when the pressing member and detachable plate are elevated away from the toe end of the shoe, or retracted to the left, the detachable plate may be readily removed merely by pulling it to the right.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. An attachment'for'use with the auxiliary pressing member of a toe lasting machine having an operating edge of predetermined contour,l comprising a relatively thin plate Icorresponding generally in over-all shape to the shape of said member, and provided with an operating edge of diierent contour, said plate having formed integrally therewith means for releasably holding it in operative position on said member. i
2. An attachment for use with the auxiliary pressing member of `a toe lasting machine having an operating edge of predetermined contour, comprising a relatively thin plate corresponding generally inoverall shape to the shape of said member and provided with an operating edge of differentcontour, said plate having formed integrally therewith means for releasably holding it in operative position on said member and an upstanding web adjacent to its operating edge for stiffening said plate and for engaging the operating edge of said pressingmember.
f 3. An attachment for use with the auxiliary pressing member of a toe lasting machine having an operating edge of predetermined contour, comprising a :relatively thin plate corresponding generally in over-all shape to the shape of said pressing member and provided with an operating edge of diierent contoun' said plate having a pair of integrally formed hook-like portions adjacent to one of its ends for slidably tting over a portion of said pressing member, and a pair of spring tabs on its opposite end for releasably engaging said pressing member.
