United States Patent TRANSOM WATER GUARD Moseley C. Collins, Jr., and Harnden H. Baskin, Jr., Clearwater, Fla.
Application December 6, 1957, Serial No. 701,029 i 3 Claims. (Cl. 9-1
This invention relates to accessories for boats, and more particularly to a removable transom cover for an outboard motor boat.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved transom guard device for an out board motor boat, said device being simple in construction, being easy to install, and serving as a guard or barrier for the otherwise .open upper portion of the transom of an' outboard motor boat so as toprevent water from being splashed into the boat.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved removable transom cover for a motor boat, said cover being inexpensive tomanufacture, being durable in construction, and serving to protect the occupants of a boat from water splashing adjacent the stern of the boat and also serving as a means to prevent the boat from being filled with water stirred up by the outboard motor.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of an outboard motor boat provided with an improved removable transom guard device according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the transom guard device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the transom guard device illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of a rear corner portion of the boat of Figure 1, showing the elastic top cord element of the guard device and the manner in which an end of the top cord element is secured to the side portion of the boat.
Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal cross sectional view taken through a top corner portion of a modified form of transom guard device according to this invention.
Figure 6 is a transverse vertical cross sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5. 7
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional which is notched away, as shown at 13, to receive a' conventional outboard motor 14. As shown in Figure 1, the outboard motor 14 is supported'onthe horizontal intermediate edge portion of the notch 13 and is secured to the transom at this location by suitable clamping means, not shown. Thus, in the normal installation of an outboard motor of this type, a large upper portion of the transom 12 is open and water may readily splash into the boat through the open portion, namely, through the notch 13. g
In accordance with thepresent invention, a guard or shield device 15 is employed, said shield device comprising a sheet of flexible waterproof material, shown Patented Mar. 1, 1960 rectangular in shape and the generally trapezoidal rear flap portion 18 which tapers downwardly in width, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. The intermediate portion of the rear member 18 is formed with a rectangular notch 19 shaped to receive the supporting portion of the outboard motor 14, shown at '20 in Figure 1. The guard sheet is suitably reinforced at its edge with a marginal hem 21 which may contain any suitable flexible reinforcing material.
The front edge of the sheet 16 is formed with the transversely extending marginal sleeve 22 through which extends an elastic cord 23 having respective rigid hooks 24, 24 secured to its ends, said hooks 24 being engageable in respective eyes 25 secured in the top edge portions of the respective sides of the boat 11 forwardly adjacent to the transom 12..
The side and lower marginal portions of the sheet 16 are provided with the spaced female snap fastener ele ments' 26 which are lockingly engageable with correspondingly located male snap fastener elements 27 secured on the outside surface of the transom 12 and on the top surfaces of the triangular brace plate members 28 connecting the top corner portions of transom 12 to the side walls of the, boat.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figures 5 and 6, the front edge of the guard sheet 16 is formed with the sleeve 22 which contains an elastic band 23, the opposite end loops of the band 23 being fastened to the respective anchoring hooks 24. As shown in Figure 5, the hooks 24 are provided with suitable eye portions 29 through which the opposite end loops of the band 23 are engaged. In the previously described form of the invention, the elastic cord 23 may be suitably tied at its ends to the eye loops of the hook members 24.
While certain specific embodiments of an improved transom water guard device for outboard motor boats be understood thatvarious modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art.
Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A transom guard device for outboard motor boats comprising a sheet of flexible waterproof material shaped to engage over the transom of an outboard motor boat and to transversely overlie the top edge of the transom and to cover the outboard motor-receiving notch of the transom, said sheet being formed with a notch at its intermediate portion which is to receive the supporting portion of an outboard motor, means formed and arranged to detachably secure the marginal portion of said sheet to the transom, an elastic tie member mounted in the upper transverse marginal portion of 'the sheet, and anchoring members secured to the opposite ends of said tie member.
2. A transom guard device for outboard motor boats comprising a sheet of flexible waterproof material shaped to engage over the transom of a motor boat and to transversely overlie the top edge of the transom and to cover the outboard motor-receiving notch of the transom, said sheet being formed with a notch at its intermediate portion to receive the supporting portion of an outboard motor, spaced snap fastener elements mounted on the marginal portions of the sheet and being formed and arranged to engage mating fastener elements on the boat transom, whereby to detachably secure the marginal portion of said sheet to the transom, an elastic tie member mounted in the upper transverse marginal portion of the sheet, and anchoring members secured to the opposite ends of said tie member.
3. A transom guard device for outboard motor boats comprising a sheet of flexible waterproof material shaped to engage over the transom of an outboard motor boat and to transversely overlie the top edge of the transom and to cover the outboard motor-receiving notch of the transom, said sheet being formed with a notch at its intermediate portion to receive the supporting portion of an outboard motor, spaced snap fastener elements mounted on the marginal portions of the sheet and being formed and arranged to engage mating fastener elements on the boat transom, whereby to detachably secure the marginal portions of said sheet to the transom, a sleeve member formed on the upper transverse edge of said sheet, an elastic tie member disposed in said sleeve member, and respective fastening hooks secured to the opposite ends of said tie member and projecting externally from the ends of said sleeve member.
