Application'october 24, 1957, Serial Nit-692,225 6 Claims. Cl. 211-85) This invention relates to improvements in supporting device, and more particularly to a device used on beaches to support articles associated with beach relaxation.

A purpose of this invention is to provide a support to keep bath robes, towels, cigarettes, drinking glasses and other articles from lying in the sand on a beach.

A further purpose is to provide a support which can be dismantled quickly and easily to form a compact carrying unit.

A further purpose is to provide a support which is easily and quickly assembled and erected.

A further purpose is to provide a device which can be manufactured cheaply and simply in quantity of inexpensive materials.

Further purposes appear in the specification and in the claims.

In the drawings I have chosen to illustrate a few only of the numerous embodiments in which my invention may appear, selecting the forms shown from the standpoints of convenience in illustration, satisfactory operation and clear demonstration of the principles involved.

In the enjoyment of beach relaxation in a sandy area adjacent to water, an array of articles such as towels, bath robes, ladies handbags, drinking glasses, suntan tion and cigarettes usually accompany the bather. Since the beach is sandy and the surface is shifting, there is no suitable place for depositing these articles. The bather is normally lying or sitting on the sand and wears bathing attire which has no pockets, so it becomes a problem to deposit these articles. The present invention provides projections and surfaces for the support of these articles in any desired location on the beach.

In use, the upright column 21 consisting of wood, plastic, light tubular metal, or the like, has at one end a point 22 the function of which is to decrease the required force to push the upright column 21 into the sand. On the opposite end of the column 21, which may be of any desirable length, two extensions 23, integral with the column 21, and having an outside diameter equal to the diameter of the column 21 form slot 24 capable of receiving a fiat vertical member 25 having a horizontal slot 27 in which a lower horizontal member 26 engages. The column 21 passes through a hole 42 in member 26 and into a recess 29 of an upper horizontal member 28, which is engaged in a slot 30 in vertical member 25.

The column 21 having slot 24 surrounds member 25 and passes through member 26 into member 28, locking all members and preventing movement in relation to each other. The grasping portion 31 has an opening 31' which will serve as a handhold, and will also receive and hold a rolled magazine,onewspaper or other paper. A column 21 below the slot 24 has transverse holes 21' and 21 which receive a cord 21 forming a suitable loop. The cord will preferably be used to fasten towels, robes, sandals and blanket or other articles to make a compact and neat package for transport to and from the beach. The cord suitably has knobs at the end and the two ends of the cord can, if desired, be tied together to shorten the loop to any required size.

A rectangular opening 34 in the upper horizontal member cooperates with a slot 35 in the vertical member to form a supporting cavity for a pack of smoking cigarettes.

In the assembly, the lower horizontal member 26 is inserted into the vertical member 25 passing through the slot 27 until the slot 36 grips the vertical side of member 25. The upper horizontal member 28 is then placed into slot 30 until slot 38 grips member 25. In this position slot 41 will grip the vertical sides of member 25. When the upper and lower horizontal members are so engaged with vertical member 25, vertical column 21 is then advanced into member 25 through slot 24, and through circular opening 42 of member 26 and into recess 29 of member 28. Column 21 is advanced until slot 43 in member 25 engages and grips the column 21 at the base of the slot 24. In this position, all members are securely located prohibiting movement relative to each other. In the disassembly, the above mentioned steps are reversed and the disassembly components can be arranged into a compact carrying bundle.

This device could be fabricated from a variety of materials, examples of which are plywood, plastic, aluminum and fiberglass.

In view of my invention and disclosure variations and modifications to meet individual whim or particular need will doubtless become evident to others skilled in the art, to obtain all or part of the benefits of my invention without copying the structure shown, and I, therefore, claim all such insofar as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A support for beach articles comprising an upright column, a flat vertical member, a lower horizontal member, and an upper horizontal member, the column having a vertical slot formed in its upper end, the flat vertical member passing through the slot of the column and having horizontal slots, the lower horizontal member engaging in one of the horizontal slots of the vertical member and having a circular opening surrounding the column, and the upper horizontal member engaging in another of the horizontal slots of the vertical member and extending laterally of the column.

2. A device of claim 1, having on the fiat vertical member a grasping portion provided with an opening.

3. A device of claim 1, in which the vertical column has openings, in combination with a cord passing through said openings.
