Description

UNITED STATES GEORGE H. MODOLE, OF JACKSON, lVIIOHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PATENT OFFICE.
I HOWARD L. MERRIMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
TRACE-COCKTEYEATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,171, dated January 22, 1884:.
- Application filed August 31, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be itknown that I, GEORGE'H. MoDoLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ackson, in the county of Jackson and State of pended.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a metal plate, the rear end, a, of which is provided with a projection, 12, which is transversely perforated, as at c, to receive the screw-bolt d, by means of which the cockeye e is connected or hinged to the rear end of said plate. The plate A is provided on its face with a projecting stud or hook, f, that is arranged about midway its length, which engages the slot 9 in the end of the trace h, which latter passes through the loop i at the forward end of the plate, as shown in the drawings. Said loop-is formed by the side bars, 7c 7r, which are curved upwardly and forwardly, and connected by a transverse bar, m, and the plate aforesaid is cut away at its forward end between the side bars. Said plate is further provided with notches n n on each side of the stud,to admit the operatorsthumb and finger inreleasing the trace from the stud when it is desired to separate the trace from the plate.
It will thus be seen by reference to the drawings that the plate with the cockeye can be readily detachedfrom the trace when it is desired to attach the latter only to the whiffletree, as there is no riveting or stitching of these parts. At the same time it is cheap to manu facture.
Having described my invention, what I;
claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The herein-described trace-cockeye attachment, consisting of the plate A, having the loopym at one end and the solid projection 72 at its opposite end, and transversely perforated to receive the bolt d of the cockeye, said plate provided with the tongue f, centrally arranged thereon to receive the eye in the traceh, and having in its sides notches n n, in combination with a cockeye, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
, GEORGE H. McDOLE.
