CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,074, dated January 15, 1t 84,

To ml! whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Unnmenn, of St. James, in the county of Gibson and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention pertains to improvements in car-couplings; and it consists of the detailed construction and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view and a sectional view of my improved carcoupler, showing two cars coupled. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the coupler. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the levers for releasing the rod carrying the coupling-pin. Fig. 4. is an elevation of part of the rod, and showing the releasing-lever.
The draw-head A is of the usual construction, and is held on the car in the usual manner. The coupling-pin B is fastened on the outer end of an arm, 0, projecting from the lower end of a rod, D, passing through and guided in a block, E, projecting from the end of the car. A handlearm, F, is pivoted to the upper end of the rod D, and extends to the car-roof, which arm F is provided with a downwardly-projecting tooth or jaw, G, adapted to engage with and catch on a cross-piece, H, of two jaws, H, between which the arm F passes. A lever, I, provided with a bend, 1, is pivoted to the inner ends of the jaws H, and is suspended from the upper end of the rod F by a chain, F, so that when the rod F is raised and the tooth G rests on the cross-piece H of the jaws H the lever I will beheld at an inclination, and when it strikes the lever on the other car will be thrown upward sufficiently to cause its bend 1 to strike the rod F, thereby pushing the tooth G from the crosspiece of the jaws H, and permitting the rod F to drop and the pin B to pass through the drawhead and coupling-link. A cord, rope, or chain, J, is to be fastened to the lower end of the rod D, and is then passed over grooved pulleys K on the end of the car, and the free end of the said rope or chain hangs down at the side of the car, and is provided with a handle-ring.
To the bottom of the draw-head A an arm, L, is pivoted, on the outer end of which arm an apron or guide, M, is formed, which is in front of the end of the draw-head. At the upper part of the apron M two recesses, m, are formed for guiding the link. inclined from its outer end upward toward the end of the draw-head. The arm L isihung on a stirrup-frame, N, which hangs in a hook formed on the outer end of a lever, O, pivoted in the block E, and projecting from the same,which lever is pressed upward by a spring, 1?, arranged in a recess in the block F. A lever, S, pivoted to the end of the car and extending to the side of the same, is adapted to pass under alug, G, on the arm 0, so that the said arm and the coupling-pin held on the same can be raised by swinging the outer end of the said lever S downward, in which raised position theywill be locked automatically by the projection G of the handle F, catching upon the cross-piece H, and the lever I will be raised, as shown in Fig. 4. If cars areto be coupled, the link is held in one draw-head, and the pin in the other draw-head is raised and is held raised by the tooth or jaw G, catching on the 'crosspiece H of the jaws H. If the entering link strikes the apron M,it slides up the same and is guided into the draw-head A. At the same time the lever I, which is not The apron M is held in the raised position, passes under the raised lever of the opposite car, and, raising the same, brings the bend 1 against the handle F, moving the projection G from the crosspiece I, and allowing the rod D to fall and couple the cars. The entering link can press the apron down more or less, according to the height of the entering link above the rail. The apron M isdrawn upward again as soon as it has been depressed by the lever O, the spring 1?, and the stirrup-flame N. If the cars come together, one apron M is pressed down by the apron on the other car, as shown, to permit the draw-heads to come together close enough.
The aprons M are each provided, onthe un der side, with a recess, M, into which the upper part of the lowered apron M can pass.
Having thus fully described my invention,
the draw-head and the inclined apron, with its rear end pivoted to the under side of the draw-head, of the stirrup-framewith its lower ends connected to the apron and its upper end contracted, and the arm 0, entering the upper contracted end of the said frame, and acted upwardly upon by the spring 1?, whereby the aprons are rendered self adjusting or acting, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head having the inclined pivoted apron on its under side, of the coupling-pin, the rod D, the arm 0, the rod F, having the tooth G, the jaws H, and the lever I, having the bend I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with the draw-head having the inclined pivoted apron on its under side, of the couplingpin, the rod D, the arm 0, the rods D F, the latter having a tooth, G, the jaws H, united by a cross bar, H, the lever I, having a bend, I, and the chain F, connected to the lever I and arm F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the draw-head A, of the'rod D, the arm 0, the coupling-pin B, the rod F, having the tooth G, the jaws H on the end of the car, and the lever I, pivoted to the car and provided with the bend 1, substantially as herein shown anddescribed, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with the draw-head A, of the rod D, the arm 0, the coupling-pin B, the pivoted arm F, provided with a tooth, G, the jaws H, united by a cross-piece, H, the lever I, having a bend, I, and the chain F, secured to the lever I and to the upper end of the pivoted arm F, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
