Description

Jan. 12, 1960 s. H. HAMMERSLEY DETACHABLE COLLARS FOR GARMENTS Filed Feb. 14, 1958 A ltomey United States Patent Office 2,920,328 Patented Jan. 12, 1960 DETACHABLE COLLARS FOR GARNIENTS Stephen Hereward Hammersley, Lyde Green, Cradley Heath, England Application February 14, 1958, Serial No. 715,358
2 Claims. (Cl. 2--98) This invention relates to collars for coats of the type having a collar permanently built on a coat and particularly having a V-notch at the junction of the outer collar portion with the lapel of the coat, and it has for its object a detachable collar for fitting over the permanent collar.
According to the present invention, a detachable collar is cut and made as an independent unit and shaped to fold over the inner and outer collar portions of a coat and a pocket is provided in the inner face of the down stand or outer collar portion of the detachable collar to receive the outer collar portion or down stand of the collar of the garment, means being provided to ensure a snug fit of the outer collar portion of the garment in the pocket when the garment is on the person.- Fastening means are also provided for detachably attaching the detachable collar over the collar of the garment.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view of the collar detached.
Figure 2 is a section through the detachable collar assembled on a permanent collar, the section through the detachable collar being indicated by line XX of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a view of the collar on a coat.
According to one form of the invention, the detachable collar is a piece of fur 1 cut to shape to fold over and cover the inner and outer collar portions or stands 6a and 6b of an ordinary collar 6 attached to a coat and has an inner lining 2 of felt or fabric. A pocket 3 is formed by stitching an inner piece 4 of felt or fabric to the edges 5 of the outer collar portion. Each end of the pocket 3 of the outer collar portion of the detachable collar is adapted to fit over the edge 7 of the garment collar 6 at the usual V-shaped notch 8 at the lapel 8a and to ensure a snug fit, the outer free edge 3a of the piece 4 forming said pocket has an elastic band 9 sewn thereto *which is fixed to the edge of the free edge of the piece 4 whilst the elastic band is in tension, so that the edge of the pocket is normally contracted, the fabric 4 forming the pocket being cut on the bias, that is the Warp and weft are at an angle to the edge of the pocket to enable the fabric to have a certain amount of stretch in the direction of the elastic band. The longitudinal free edge 3a of the pocket is elastically contracted and can be elastically extended to elastically grip near the crease edge of the inner and outer collar portions 6a and 6b of the collar 6 of the garment to give a holding snug fit of the fur collar on the collar 6 of the garment. The said free longitudinal edge of the pocket extends to a position adjacent the fold between the inner and outer collar portions 1a and 1b of the detachable collar. A press button 14 is provided at the edge of the pocket at the centre to fasten same inside the outer collar. The edge of the inner collar of the detachable collar is provided with component parts of press studs 11 for engaging component parts of press studs on the garment and the inner collar portion 1a of the detachable collar has a V-notch 12 at the centre to enable the inner collar portion to nest against the collar of the garment. A press button 14 fixes the permanent collar portion 6b in the pocket 3. The shape of the detachable collar is similar to the shape of the permanently fixed collar before it is built and sewn to the coat.
The detachable collar can be readily fitted by first engaging the outer collar portion 6b of the collar 6 in the pocket 3, the ends of the pocket engaging over the edges 7 of the collar portion 6b. The press button 14 is then engaged. The portion 1a is then folded into position and'fixed by the press buttons 11.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be covered by Letters Patent, is:
1. A detachable collar formed as a separate unit for fitting over a collar which is permanently built on a coat and which detachable collar has an inner collar or stand up portion and an outer collar or stand down portion, comprising a shaped piece of pliable material which is folded on itself to form inner and outer collar portions adapted to lie over the said inner and outer collar portions of said permanent collar on the coat, a pocket on the inner face of said piece of material forming the outer collar portion of the separate unit and adapted to receive the outer collar portion of the permanent collar with the ends of the pocket engaging over the ends of the outer collar portion of the permanent collar formed by V-notches between the latter outer collar portion and the lapels and the free edge of said pocket adapted to extend to the fold between the outer and inner collar portions of the permanent collar, and an elastic band attached to a central portion of and extending longitudinally along the free edge portion of the pocket so that such free edge is longitudinally extensible and which edge extends into a position adjacent the fold between the innor and outer collar portions of the detachable collar to elastically grip the ends of the pocket against the edges of the outer collar portions formed by said V-notches.
2. A detachable collar formed as a separate unit for fitting over a collar which is permanently built on a coat and which detachable collar has an inner collar or stand up portion and an outer collar or stand down portion, comprising a shaped piece of pliable material which is folded on itself to form inner and outer collar portions adapted to lie over the said inner and outer collar portions of said permanent collar on the coat, a pocket on the inner face of said piece of material forming the outer collar portion of the separate unit and adapted to receive the outer collar portion of the permanent collar with the ends of the pocket engaging over the ends of the outer collar portion of the permanent collar formed by V-notches between the latter outer collar portion and the lapels and the free edge of said pocket adapted to extend to the fold between the outer and inner collar portions of the permanent collar, and an elastic band attached to a central portion of an extending longitudinally along the free edge portion of the pocket so that such free edge is longitudinally extensible and which edge extends into a position adjacent the fold between the inner and outer collar portions of the detachable collar to elastically grip the ends of the pocket against the edges of the outer collar portions formed by said V-notches, and a V-notch in the centre of the free edge of the inner collar portion of the detachable collar.
