FURNACE FOR HEATING BLANKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,967, dated January 15, 1854,
Application filed April 21, 1883. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I]. \VEBB, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Blast- Furnaces for Heating Bolt-Blanks; and I declare the following to be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Figure I is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view. Fig. 3 is avertical section on the line :1: 0c of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of my invention.
My invention relates to blast-furnaces in general, but more especially to the piling-furnaces used in bolt-manufacture for the heating of the bolt-blanks.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The drawings represent my said invention as applied to a double rotating blast-furnace.
Upon the base A is erected the air-chamber B,which receives ablast of cold air through the pipe 0. Said airchamber is covered by a top piece, D,which revolves horizontally on the balls a, and supports the double blastfurnaces and their appurtenances.
Through a central aperture of the cover D is the pipe E, opening into the cross-pipe F, which conveys the blast through the windboxes G G, respectively, and through the ashboxes H H and beneath the grates I I of the fire-boxes J J. The blast may be cut off from either furnace, as desired, by means of the dampers K, operated by the handles L L and rods M M M M. Branch blast-pipes N N open into the cross-pipe F, and convey the air blast to the wind-boxes O O. A gate, P, is placed in each pipe NN, to shut off or regulate the aircurrents in either pipe, as desired.
- Said windboxes O O, on each side, are placed in front of the boxes H H, just below the plane of the grates I I. A shelf, Q, extending in front of said fire-box J, iits over and covers the wind-box O, and has a central longitudinal slot, 2), permitting the escape of the air upward. A metallic case, R,,forms the exterior walls of the furnace, being suitably lined, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and fits within the ledges c c. A dome, S, having a central funnel, covers the furnace. The boltblanks T are piled in the open space below the iron plate or fender U, upon the hearth V, as fully shown in Fig. 3, and their heads are thus brought into direct contact with the mass of burning coal in the fire-box J. The fender U extends downward near to the hearth V, and is supported within the vertical grooves of the bolt-guides IV. The construction and arrangement of these parts are shown in horizontal section in Fig. 2, as seen on the line 1 2 of Fig. 4. The bolt-guides W have a sloping the bolts T. As the lowest bolts T are withdrawn, as illustrated inFig. 3, the bolts above fall or slide along the sloping edges of the bolt-guides to a central position, instead of piling in the corners, as they would do if they dropped vertically into place. The bolt-guides 7 rest upon the shelf Q, and are held in position there by their own weight. They have vertical grooves (Z cl on each side, and when the inner surface of said guides has been burned out, they can be lifted out of position and turned around or reversed to bring the opposite side to the fire.
The blast in other furnaces drives out the flames and heat, and prevents the workman from conveniently removing such heated blanks; but my device intercepts and diverts the hot-air currents by a strong vertical blast of cold air. The cold blast passes from the air-chamberB up through the pipes E, F, and N into the wind-boxes O O, whence it escapes through the openings or slots Z) b,with force suf ficient to cut off the horizontal hot-air currents issuing between the pile Tfrom the firebox, thus forming, as it were, abody or screen of cold air in front of the furnace and shielding the workman from the intense heat, while permitting close handling of the heated blanks, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a piling-furnace, the combination of a fire-box, J, shelf Q, and the side bolt-guides, WV, having inclined edges, substantially as described.
