INVENTOR @Attorney PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT M. BIGGER, OF HUGHESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
PORTABLE STEAM-ENGINE.'
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,279, 'dated January 1, 1884.-
Applicaticn filed June 1, 1883. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. BIGGER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hughesville, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,l such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this speciiication.
Figure l is a perspective view of a steamboiler, showing the manner in which I apply the engine to it. Fig. 2 is an elevation of head of the boiler with engine applied.
The nature of my invention consists in improvements in portable steam-engines, which will be fully understood from the annexed drawings, when taken in connection with the following description.
v A designates a horizontal steam-boiler, B the fire-box, and C the smoke-box, which parts are mounted upon and properly secured to a substantial foundation, D.
E E are horizontal bed-plates, which are rigidly fastened upon the sides of the foundation D, and to which the engine and its appliances are secured. It will be observed by reference to the drawings that the engine is located beneath the body of the boiler, and that it has a support independently thereof.
F designates the steam-cylinder, which is rigidly but removably secured by plate c to the bed-plate E; and b designates the pistonrod, which is connected to a rectilinear reciprocating slide, c, moving on a way, c. The slide c is connected to a pitman-rod, d, which is connected to a wrist-pin on the outer face of an eccentric, G. This. eccentric is keyed on one end of the horizontal transverse iiywh'eel shaft H, which has its bearings upon pillow-blocks or their equivalents fixed to the bedplate E, which are located beneath the boiler, as shown in the drawings.
.I designates the steamchest, which is secured upon the valve-plate at an inclination, for the purpose of allowing the valve-rod g to run straight to the eccentric, the axis of the below the horizontal plane of the steam-chest. I am thus able to transmit motion from the eccentric direct to the slide-valve.
K designates the exhaust-pipe, which starts from a point back of the steam-cylinder, extends rearward beneath the boiler and flywheel shaft, and enters the smokebox beneath 'the uptake or stock.
It will be seen from the above description that the steam-engine and its appliances are below the top of the boiler, and have their supports independently of the boiler but upon the same solid foundation.
The advantages of this arrangement of the engine is that none of its journals or joints will be heated or impaired by the direct boilerheat, nor will the parts be subjected to undue vibration, as they are not attached to the boiler-shell, as hitherto.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, in a portable engine, of a horizontal steam-cylinder mounted on a base-frame, a steam-boiler mounted on the same frame independently ofthe said cylinder, a transverse iiy-wheel shaft below t-he boiler-shell, a steanrchest having an inclined valve-seat, and a valve rod connected direct: ly to the flywheel shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a portable engine, of a horizontal steam-cylinder, a iiy-wheel shaft arranged in the same horizontal plane as the said cylinder, a steam-chest havingan inclined valve-seat, and a valve-rod connected directly to the fly-wheel shaft, substantially as described.
In vtestimony whereof I aflix my signatureiu presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT M. BIGGER.
