To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES BURNS, a citizen of the United- States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 5 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash and Parcel Carriers, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawings. R

This invention relates to certain improvements in cash and parcel carriers for the use of shops and stores, which improvements I will fully set forth and explain in the following specification.

Referring to the drawings, and especially to Fig. 1, the figure represents a store-room with the apparatus applied,ready for use. A

z 5 pair of wires, w and w, (or it may be one single wire passing over the pulley 1-,) are stretched from the end of the room, at which the counter D is located, to the cashiers desk D, on the opposite side of the room. The

upper wire, w, is inclined toward the cashiers desk, so the cash-box B will run down it to the desk D, while the lower wire, w, inclines downward from the cashiers desk toward the counter D, so the cash-box B will run down from the cashiers desk to the counter. These wires 10 and to may be two separate wires, or all one wire, passing over the pulley r at the cashiers desk and return, as shown. Tension is given the wires by means of a ratchet and 0 pawl, R.

The cash-boX and parcel-carrier is shown at B, Figs. 1, 3, and 4, also on its upper end in Fig. 5. For a description of its construction reference is had to Figs. 3 and 4., particularly.

The lower end of the cash-carrier is provided with a receptacle, a, in which the salesman is to inclose the'cash to be sent to the cashiers desk D to have the change made. This receptacle a is opened and closed by a slide, S. The

upper end of the carrier'is provided with a sheave-wheel, o which travels on the wires w and w. Spring-arms 12 attach to the side of the carrier, as shown in Fig. 4,so that,when the carrier is elevated to be placed on the wires to and w, the saidspring-arms will conduct said wires in under the sheave-wheel.

The hook H on the lower end of the carrier B is for the purpose of attaching the parcel to be carried to it, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the carrier is also provided with a hook, a,f0r the purpose of furnishing means for elevating the carrier up to one of the wires w w, but in this case to the upper wire. 10.

The manner of placing the carrier B on the wire 10 is shown in Figs. 1 and 4. A strap,

ribbon, or cord, y, passes over a roller or pulley, z, in the ceiling, over the space between the counter and the shelves, as shown in said figures. One end of said strap y is provided with a plate, 0, having an opening or hole, c through it, corresponding in size with the hook a on the upper end of the carrier B, into which the said hook a is hooked, as shown in Fig. 4. The operator then pulls on the other end of said strap y and elevates the carrier B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, until the wire 10 is caught between it and the spring-arn1s o o, and brought under the sheave-wheel 0, when the carrier is permitted to descend and rest on said wire w on said sheave-wheel, when the carrier unhooks from the plate 0, and is carried by its own gravity down said wire to to the cashier s desk D, wherethe change is made, placed in receptacle a, and then the carrier B is placed on the descending wire w by the cashier, to return to the counter, as shown in Fig. 1. If it is desired to send the parcel with the cash for inspection by the cashier, or to be tied up and returned, it can be done by attaching the parcel P to the carrier by means of the hook H, as shown in said figure.

When the carrier B returns to the counter D, as shown in Fig.1, it is necessary to disengage the carrier from the wire w and deliver it to the counter D. This is accomplished by lneans'of a switch, (I, in the wire to, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5. When the carrier B reaches the juncture of the switch (1 with the wire to, the sheave-wheel c is disengaged or thrown off the wire 1'0 and drops the carrier into the basket'A, as shown in Fig. 1, which descends with'it to the counter. The basket A is suspended from the wall over the counter D by means of the straps t t, passing up .run in over it to drop 1n it, as shown, and the over the pulleys ,2 s. The outer ends of the straps t t are provided with the wei hts at so, which are of sufiicient weight to keep the basket up just high enough so the carrier can knots or pins a", in said straps t I, prevent the basket A from ascending toohigh. The outer end of the switch (I is supported from the main wire 10 by the clamp (Z and d is a bumper, made of leather, cloth, or any suitable material, for arresting the carrier when it comes to that place. The sheave-wheel c is set so its lower traveling tread is flush with the end S of the outer frame, so as to make it easy for the wires to b e inserted or disengaged, as stated, and the pulley z is so set as to cause the strap 1 to draw the carrier B to and against the wire :0, so it can be seated on the wire easily and never miss catching the wire between it and the spring-arms o c to conduct the wire into its place. Any number of these track-wires w and 10 may be used to radiate in any direction from the cashiers desk to any counter or desk desired, and at the close of the day all the carriers can be sent in from each counter where an account can be kept of them, and distributed again by the cashier the next day. \Vhen it is desired to turn a corner or angle with the track-wires to u", a section of it may be taken out at such angle and substituted by a piece of flat metal, like hoop-iron, set on its edge and bent around the angle to be turned, andsupported by any suitable means. By the use of this device each salesman makes his change direct with the cashier, and when it is desired to have the cashier inspect the parcel,

to ascertain if all the articles are in it that aecompanies the bill with the cash, it can be done all at one operation, so that the device may be used for either purpose separately or for both at once, if desired.

The whole forms a very neat, cheap, and effective device for the purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows, to wit:

1. The combination of the wire 10, having the switch (1, wire a, carrier B, having the cash-receptacle a, hooks a and H, sheavewheel 0, and spring-arms '1: o, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The cash and parcel carrier B, having the cash-receptacle a. hooks a and H, sheave c, and spring-arms o 1;, adapted to operate as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the carrier B, wires 10 and 10, strap 1 plate 0, having the perforation 0 and roller ,2, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination of the carrier B, wire 10, wire having the switch (I and bumper d, and catch-basket A, and straps t if, having the stop-pins z 2* and weights or .r, and pulley 2, as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of the basket A, straps t 25, having the stop-pins z z, rollers z z, and weights a: w, as and for the purpose set forth.

6. In a parcel and cash carrier, the trackwire 10 10, having the switch (1 and bumper d, and ratchet R and pulley r, as and for the purpose set forth.
