UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
REUBEN WINE-REE, OF KEYTESYILLE, MISSOURI.
HORSE HAY-RAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,725, dated December 25, 1883,
Application filed August 1, 1883. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may cancer-h:
Be it known that I, REUBEN WINFREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keytesville, in the county of Charlton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Hay- Rake, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to horse hay rakes or gatherers; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, having for their object to produce a device which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on theline x a: in Fig. 1.
The same letters refer to the same parts in both figures.
Ain the drawings designates the rake-head, which consists of teeth B B, connected by crossbars 0 and D, forming the rake-head. The front cross-bar, D, is provided with blocks E supporting a cross-head, F. Two or more of the teeth are mounted upon runners G, or, if preferred, upon wheels or casters near the rear ends of the said teeth.
H is the tongue, which extends rearwardly from the rake-head, as shown. The tongue is provided near its front end with diagonallyextending braces I I. The front ends of said braces and of the tongue are connected with the front crossbar, D, of the rake-head by means of flexible hinge-strips J J of springsteel or other suitable equivalent material. This construction insures an ease and elasticity of action, which in this class of devices is is swiveled a guide or caster-wheel, L, the
shank M of which is provided at its upper end with a lever, N, adapted to be operated by the foot of the driver for the purpose of guiding the machine.
To the cross-bars of the rake'head are secured uprights O P, which are connected by an arm or lever, Q, extending rearwardly to within convenient reach of the driver. The tongue has an upright, R, provided with notches S, in any one of which the said arm or lever may be adjusted for. the purpose of retaining it in position.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, inexpensive, and easily manipulated.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the rake-head, constructed substantially as described, of the rearward-extending tongue having diagonal braces, said tongue and braces hinged to the rake-head by means of straps of spring-steel, and mechanism for adjusting the rakehead in relation to the tongue, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses. I
' REUBEN W'INFREE.
