Be it known that we, EMORY S'rooKwELL and HERBERT O. S'rooKwELL, both of Staniford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Time-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Our present invention is an improvement upon the time-lock patented to Emory Stockwell, one of the parties hereto, in the United States, January 9, 1877, No. 186,177, inwhich isshown a supplementary unlocking device; and our purpose is to provide against any possible trouble from the operation of the supplementary unlocking device at a time when it may be undesirable.

In a patent of said Emory Stockwell, No. 168,062, granted September 21, 1875, means are provided for protecting a time-lock from injury by concussion of any sort. These means are the use of springs in which the movement is cushioned. Experiments have proved that by a proper arrangement of springs the time locks constructed in accordance with the pat ents of said Emory Stockwell will not be injured by concussion. In some situations, however, it may be desirable to guard against sudden springing of the supplemental unlocking device by very heavy concussions, which springing would cause the lock to unlock. To prevent any damage of this sort is the object of our invention, and we accomplish this object by means of a pin which passes through the back plate of the lock-case, and extends against or almost against the inner surface of the door of the safe or vault to which the lock is applied. Between the lock-case and .the door are rubber washers around the bolts which hold the lock to the door. These rubber washers permit, under a heavy concuss'ion, the door and lock to approach each other. The result of this approach will be to drive the pin into the path of the stud or ledge of the supplemental unlocking device and lock it fast, so that it cannot operate.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view, partly in section, of the said time-lock with our improvement applied; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

In these dr'awings A indicates the bolt or dog of the time-lock, pivoted at B, and provided with a supplemental unlocking device, 0, having a stud or latch, D, which engages with one of the triggers E F, all these parts being constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth in the said patent (No. 186,17 7) of Emory Stockwell. 1

G indicates a pin secured in any suitable way in the time-lock case, and projecting back almost in contact with the inner plate of the door F at one end, and standing normally out of the path of the stud D at the other end, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Vhenever a concussion takes place outside the door of suflicient force to endanger the engagement of the triggers of the supplemental unlocking device, this pin will be driven inward, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, so as to extend in the path of the stud D and prevent the operation of the supplemental unlocking device.

We are aware that it is not new to provide a pin of this character adapted to be driven inward to serve a useful purpose in preventing the unlocking of a time-lock, such a device having been patented by said H. 0. Stockwell, and we therefore do not claim such a device, broadly; but
