Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
ALEXANDER ENGLAND, OF KINGMAN, MAINE.
HIDE-SPLITTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,555, dated December 18, 1883.
Application iiled July 3, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern: t
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ENGLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingman, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hide-Splitters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked tjhereon, which form a part of this specificaion.'
My invention relates to an implement for splitting hides, the object being to provide a simple and inexpensive tool for this purpose which shall be adapted to split the hides evenly and with precision.
The invention consists in the combination, with a guiding-plate of novel construction, of a sliding rod provided with a projecting cutter, as hereinafterfully described. y
In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 represents the sliding rod and cutter detached.
A represents a guiding-plate, consisting of parallel bars B B, connected by suitable crossbraces, G C. and interiorly recessed; so that when the two bars are secured together there will be an inverted-T-shaped guideway, D,-
block E is'provided with a knife or cutter, F, projecting through an opening, d, in the bottom of the block.
G represents a rod secured (preferably pivoted) to the block E, and serving as a handle 4o for operating the block and its cutter.
The utility and operation of my device will be readily understood. It is laid upon the hide to be split and held thereon by hand or in any preferred manner. as already described, project below the bars B B, and by sliding the rod G a straight guided 'cut is insured, so that the hide may be split accurately.
It will be apparent that any suitable cutter may be employed in lieu of the knife inserted through the block E, and that other slight alterations in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit The knife E will,
of my invention; hence I do not limitI myself to the precise constructon shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hide-splitting tool, the combination, with parallel bars connected by cross-braces and interiorly recessed to form a guideway, of a block corresponding to said guideway and adapted to slide therein, a knife secured to said block and projecting below said bars between the latter, and a rod or handle secured to said block, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER ENGLAND.
Witnesses FRED ELLIOTT, TEUEMAN MANUEL.
