9 Claims. 01. 155-131 This invention relates to an elevated or booster seat for children which is adapted to be attached to a chair.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a seat attachment for a chair which can be adjusted to comfortably seat at a table, or for feeding, a child ranging in age from an infant to a child who can occupy a normal chair with the same ease and freedom as an adult.
A further object of this invention is to provide a seat attachment as aforesaid which can be adjusted relative to a chair and secured thereto very quickly and with a minimum of effort.
Another important object of this invention is to provide a lightweight seat attachment which can be folded into a compact unit for storing or for carrying.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a seat attachment for children which is extremely sturdy and durable while it is still a further important object to provide a seat attachment which is of an inexpensive con struction.
The principal feature of this invention resides in supporting a seat element rearwardly from the back rest above the seat of a chair and forwardly from the front legs of a chair, by support members which can be secured to the back rest and legs respectively, whereby a child occupant will be elevated or boosted relative to a table of normal height.
Another principal feature of this invention resides in providing the support members in the form of extensible interlocking support members whereby the seat element may be adjusted relative to the chair and to comfortably seat children of various ages.
Another important feature of the invention resides in pivotally connecting the forwardly located extensible support members to the seat element of the booster seat in order that the seat can be folded into a compact unit for storing or for carrying.
Another feature of this invention resides in forming each upper portion of the forwardly located extensible support members adjacent the pivotal connection with a curve or knee whereby the upper surface will abut the underside of the seat element and limit forward movement when the booster seat is mounted on a chair.
Another feature resides in providing a foot rest element between the extensible forward support members which can be adjusted relative to the seat element as required by the child.
These and other objects and features will become apparent on reading the following description in conjunc tion with the sheet of drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the booster seat attachment mounted on a chair;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the booster seat attachment of Figure l in its folded or compact state;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a clamp device for attaching a booster seat to a chair.
With reference to Figure 1 of the drawings, a booster seat 1 constructed according to the invention is illustrated as being mounted on a chair 2, shown in dotted lines.

Patented Sept. 15, 1959 Each tubular member 8 opens rearwardly and is provided with a support rod 10 which is adapted to slide therewithin and extend rearwardly as seen in dotted lines in Figure 2. Support rods 10 can be locked in any selected position by threaded pins 11 operating in threaded apertures 12 in tubular member 8 registering with a series of spaced apertures (not shown) formed throughout the lengths of rods 10.
Pivotally mounted on pivots 13 in flattened ends 14 of rods 10 are clamp devices generally designated at 15 which can best be seen in Figure 3.
With reference to Figure 3 the clamp device 15 comprises essentially a part-circular member 16 lined with a suitable cushioning and gripping material 17, as for example, rubber; foam latex and the like, which is adapted to receive a backrest support member 3 or legs 5 of a chair as illustrated in Figure l.
The part-circular member 16 is carried by a bracket 18 which is mounted on pivot 13 at the end 14 of rod 10. This allows the clamp 15 to be aligned for clamping to a member which is at an angle to the axis of rod 10.
Mounted at one side of the opening 19 in the part-circular member 16 is an over-center lever 20 which is provided with a wire loop 21. The wire loop 21 is adapted to engage a lip 22 formed adjacent to the opposite side of opening 19 and under the action of lever 20 to close the opening to exert clamping pressure against a mem- With reference to Figures 1 and 2, the tubular members 8 extend forwardly beneath seat element 6 and terminate in vertically slotted portions 23 in which pivots 24 are mounted for connecting the flattened ends 25 forwardly supporting J-shaped tubular members 26 to the seat element 6. Curved portions or knees 27 of the J-shaped tubular support members 26 are provided in order that upper surfaces 28 of end portions 25 can abut the inner surfaces 29 of tubular members 8 to limit forward movement when the booster seat is mounted on a chair.
Slidably received within tubular members 26 and adapted to be extensible downwardly are support rods 30. In a manner similar to support rods 10, rods 30 can be locked in a selected extended position by threaded pins 31 operating in tapped holes 32 registering with one of a series of apertures 33 located throughout the length of each of the rods 30.
Each of the rods 30 are formed with a section 34 bent at approximately right angles to the axis of rods to support a foot rest member or step 35 which is secured to sections 34 by suitable screws 36.
A flange 37 projecting rearwardly from rods 30 has pivotally mounted thereon clamp devices 38 which are identical with clamp devices 12 illustrated in Figure 3 and are operable as above described.
When the booster seat attachment 1 is to be mounted on a chair as illustrated in Figure 1 the support rods 10 and 30, respectively, are withdrawn and locked in a selected position by locking pins 11 and 32, respectively, corresponding to the size of the chair and the child who is to occupy it. By means of clamps 12 and 38 the booster seat 1 can be securely attached to the members 3 and legs 5 of a chair 2 and if any further adjustment is necessary it can be executed while the booster seat remains clamped.
It will be appreciated that the booster seat can be mounted on a chair and detached very quickly with a minimum of effort and further folds into a compact unit for-storing and carrying, very simply.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been describedand illustrated it will be appreciated that various modifications may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention as described in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A booster chair for supporting a child above the seat of a chair comprising a seat element, rearwardly adjustable support means for supporting said seat element from a chair back and forwardly vertically adjustable support means for supporting said seat element from the front legs of a chair against vertical and horizontal displacement and means for attaching each of said horizontally and vertically adjustable support means to the back of a chair and to the front legs of a chair, respectively.
2. A seat attachment for a chair comprising a seat element, a pair of spaced extensible support members secured to said seat element and being extensible rearwardly thereof, a pair of spaced vertically extensible support members secured to said seat forwardly thereof and being adapted to be extensible substantially vertically downwardly and forwardly of the seat of a chair in spaced relation to the front legs thereof, means for locking each of said extensible support members in a selected extended position and clamp means for clamping each of said horizontally extensible support members to a chair back, and each of said vertically extensible support members to the front legs of a chair, respectively.
3. A seat attachment according to claim 2 in which said vertically extensible support members are pivotally secured to said seat element for folding into substantial planar relation with said seat element for storage.
4. A seat attachment according to claim 3 in which said vertically extensible support members have a curved configuration adjacent to their upper ends to present a horizontal portion to the underside of said seat element for abutment thereagainst to limit forward movement of said extensible support members.
5. A'seat attachment according to claim 4 in which said vertically extensible support members are provided with a foot rest member therebetween.
6. An adjustable seat attachment for a chair comprising a seat element, a pair of extensible support members for supporting said seat rearwardly thereof and adapted to extend substantially horizontally for attachment to the back of a chair and a pair of extensible support members for supporting said seat forwardly thereof and adapted to extend substantially vertically downwardly in front of the seat of a chair for attachment to the front legs of a chair and clamp means carried by each of said support members for releasably clamping same to the back of a chair and to the front legs of a chair respectively.
7. A seat attachment for supporting children above the seat of a chair including a seat element, means for supporting said seat element comprising a pair of spaced tubular members rigidly secured to the underside of said seat and a second pair of spaced tubular members pivotally supported at their upper ends adjacent to the leading edge of said seat, said first pair and second pair of tubular members opening rearwardly and downwardly, respectively, each having slidablymounted therein rod members carrying at their outer ends clamp means for clamping said rods to a chair and means for locking said rods against sliding action relative to said tubular members.
8. A seat attachment according to claim 7 in which said second pair of spaced tubular members have a horizontal portion adjacent to their point of pivotal support for abutment against the underside of said seat element to limit forward movement of said members.
9. A seat attachment according to claim 8 in which said vertically slidable rods are provided with a foot rest member therebetween.
